Hi Jetstream...bit of a puzzler here? You say your looking for a Thomas born 58/59 but at the moment i cant seem to find a Thomas matching that date of birth. In looking for the 1871 census i found this though so i,ll post it anyway...
Thomas Kent born B Norfolk age 38 Alice G Kent B Southampton age 39 Thomas w s Kent B Southampton age 1
All living Southampton All Saints RG10/1192 Folio 101 page10
I,ll carry on having a look through but where did you find date of birth from originally? regards cheryle.f P.S your Thomas should have been 11,12,13 in 1871census but not any showing up of this age born Southampton.Do you have his mothers/fathers name? That little bit of info may help locate him.

Hi again Jetstream,i checked on 1837online for you to find out if he was def. telling fibs about his age( one of mine did that on his marriage cert. by 6 years and put me off track for ages). There were many Thomas,s born in 57,58 and 59 but none anywhere near southampton as far as i can tell and i live in bournemouth so none of these names ring a bell to me except this one of Thomas Kent born Amesbury Oct nov dec 1858 5a 166 which i think is over this way somewhere but i,m sure someone like little nell (mod)can confirm for you. That is the only one so he was either lying about date if birth or place of birth if the Thomas above is not him .regards cheryle.f

Hi to both of you,
Reading your posts, I've had a thought which may be the answer some of the problems, but doesn't solve them. Hampshire used to be known as Southampton[shire] - it changed some time in the 19th century, can't pinpoint the date exactly. Confirmation of his age range - I use the word range deliberately because many many people got their ages wrong on census info - from some more sources may help pin down the right one.
Amesbury is actually in Wiltshire, but the registration district borders one or two in Hampshire. Will investigate some more on this later.
Nell
