PARISH RECORD - McAuslan/ McAuslane
« on: Friday 05 May 06 09:48 BST (UK) »

I have got back to 1825 but want to check that i am not now going off in the wrong direction.
 Tongue
I have William Taylor b 09/04/1878 Stirling PARENTS married 30/11/1877 are William Taylor & Charlotte McAusland (may be McAuslan/e also) born approx 1850 Dovey, Stirling
Her parenst are where i get stuck.
Peter McAuslan (who I think married Mary Ann Millar on 30/12/1853)

Now - I have found a Peter McAuslan b 26/09/1826 Bonhill, Dumbarton whose parents are Alexander McAuslan(e) & Helen MacNicol married 14/06/1823.

I need to make sure they are all connected. It is difficult as the records seem to have altered the spelling

Can you clear it up for me?

Hi Lesley

Be prepared for spelling changes as you work further back in the records. There was no acceptable standard spelling for any given name and the Registrar or minister would write it in the way they thought correct. A broad accent would not help matters. Some of the Irish names have been changed almost beyond recognition.
We looked yesterday for the name Lapraik and found 23 variations in spelling and that was only across three parishes.
I suggest that an IGI county search might bring up the names of other siblings which would confirm the parental line. Naming patterns of children is a useful, but not infallible, guide.
IGI searches cover a wider range of name variations compared to scotlandspeople but you may need to think up a few outrageous possibilities too which would not be included in a narrow search.
e.g. one Lapraik entry was LWPRICK. Since we knew the names and date of marriage of the parents anyway we were sure we had identified the child following the naming patterns.

Good  luck
