Hi!
I was hoping that someone might be able to trace the family of Cornelius and Elizabeth Spain in the Census Returns for 1861 and 1871, probably in East Stonehouse or Plymouth.
They married in Wirksworth, Derbys in 1838 but by 1862 they had moved to Devon, their daughter Harriet being married at East Stonehouse in that year with her sister Louisa acting as a witness.
Elizabeth Spain died at 3 Wyndham Street West, Plymouth in 1877. Her death certificate states that she was the widow of Cornelius, whose occupation was given as being a draper - at the time of his marriage he was a hawker and on Harriet's marriage certificate it said he was a traveller! Her daughter Rose Spain was present at the death.
I have not been able to find any record of Cornelius' death, so if anyone is able to track this down.....need I say more!
Hopefully someone will be able to shed a bit of light on this side of my family history.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
Ju

Hi Nicky!
Thanks for looking at this for me-it is definitely 'my' Elizabeth, as Harriet Spain (her daughter) married Henry Scown and I know they had a son also called Henry, who was born in Plymouth.
As for Cornelius Spain, I know that he and Elizabeth had left Derbyshire by 1851, but am still none the wiser as to when and why they ended up in Devon. Sometimes I wish families would stay in one place, but then I guess that makes it much less interesting and I've got more than enough 'ag labs' in some of the other branches of my family!
Anyway, thanks again!

Hi there!
Just to say thanks to everyone who has looked into this for me so far!
I now know that Cornelius and his family were living in Exeter at the time of the 1851 Census and it may be that they did not settle in Plymouth prior to the Census in 1861 as I first thought.
If anyone can spare the time to see if they can be found anywhere in Devon in the 1861 Census I would be very grateful.
Ju.

Hi!
Thanks for taking the trouble to look into this for me.
I had already been sent the census info, although I was only looking at it again the other day to try to work out what Harriet and Louisa's occupation was in 1861. I wasn't really sure, so now that's been solved!
I'm now hoping that someone might be able to help me find out what happened to the male members of the family after 1861, as they are the ones I'm having problems with!
I now know that Cornelius Spain was born in Dublin in about 1818.In 1851 he was living with his family in Exeter, with his occupation given as a spectacle maker and lodging house keeper. As Elizabeth was a widow in 1861 he must have died between 1851 and 1861, but I cannot find any details of his death, despite going through all the records on 1837online. There is a Cornelius Spain living in Liverpool in 1861 whose details tie up apart from the fact that he is unmarried, but I cannot prove if this is the same man. If anyone can find the details of his death I would be very grateful as it's really bugging me!
Cornelius and Elizabeth had another son, Michael, who was born in Blandford, Dorset in about 1845. He was on a vessel called the Implacable in Cornwall in 1861, but I do not have any info on him after this.
Thomas Spain joined the Royal Navy - in 1881 he was on the "Serapis" - but I cannot find him on the 1871 census.
Finally, I cannot find Cornelius Spain, born in 1852, on any census returns after 1861. However, FreeBMD shows the marriage of a Junier Spain in the district of Stoke Damerel in the Qtr to Mar 1870, which might possibly be him.
Well, I think that covers everything!
Any help in tracing the elusive Spains would really be appreciated.
