What parish did you find Barradarroch in?

It may have been abandoned or demolished over the years. Or it could still be there, but may have been re-named, or the spelling may have changed.

Hi Aeroqueen Smiley
Have you had a look on Genuki  Huh

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ARL/

I can't see Barradarroch on the list of parishes for Argyle, maybe it was a house name.

Hi Aeroqueen,

Barradarroch (spelled as Bardarroch) can be found on the 1890s parish map at
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/os_scotland_2nd_ed_list.html
Select Sheet 36 - Kilmartin
The northern part of North Knapdale parish is the dark green parish near the south-east corner of the map. Click on that to zoom in in it. Keep zooming in until you can read the grid-square number 160.N.W. Click in the south-east corner of that grid-square and you should find Bardarroch up the hill from the Crinan Canal. It was probably a farm, or at least a croft.

If you go to find the same point on a modern map, go to
--> click here <--
You will find that Barradarroch (or Bardarroch) is no longer shown on the map and seems to have been forested over.

Also no sign of it on the 1920s OS map at
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/os_scotland_popular_list.html
Sheet 70 - North Jura & Firth of Lorne
Near the south-east corner (grid-square 9-O)

Hi Aeroqueen,

I went grazing in a bookshop this afternoon and found a larger scale map of the area and it still shows Bardarroch. It is Ordnance Survey "Explorer Series" - Sheet 358 - Lochgilphead & Knapdale North.
http://62.25.96.205/products_new/25k/specific.cfm?M25k_no=E358N#top

Here is the Bardarroch portion of that map in the online version.
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/
Then click on "I want to get a map now"
Enter NR808915 in the search box, then "go".

I was in that area a few years back and I may well have walked right past Bardarroch. The tracks shown on the map are publicly accessible forest tracks.

See also for reference if you intend to visit the forest there.

The e-mail contact on that website may well be able to advise you what now exists at Bardarroch.

Just thought that I would throw in my twopenny worth to add to what has already been said.
There is no place called Bardarroch / Barradarroch as such. Bardarroch is, or was, a small loch near Crinan village in Argyll.
By coincidence there is a house, but not a place, called Baldarroch but that is in Perthshire.

Not true - see the maps as per the links above - the buildings are clearly shown there.

Hello ADP,

It looks like you have well and truly snookered me and put me in a corner. There is a place called Bardarroch after all - well who would believe it ?
In a fit of pique I have just thrown my copy of the Gazetteer of Scotland out of the window. It had the temerity to suggest it was actually a small loch near Crinan. Here was me trying to be helpful to someone and suddenly finding out that my "Bible" was wrong. Perhaps it was partly right.
Keep up the good work.

If it helps, my ancestors came from Jura and lived in the area around the 1850s at least - that's one of the few traces of them I can find atm.

They were called Darroch - so maybe it was named after their house? Or they were named after the village?
