Pilkington Crest and Motto 'Now Thus, Now Thus'

Photo on my webpage
« on: Friday 12 May 06 00:58 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

I've just joined!  Wink

I'm in the middle of downloading web pages created by  Family Historian.  One page which had a photo on it has not uploaded -  it's a jpeg and it's 20.6 KB.  When I tried to upload it said 'bad file name'.   Angry   I've just got a little box with a red cross in it on the page.

How can I correct this please?   Undecided

Many thanks Jools from Northants   Shocked

Hi Jools,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley Smiley

can you give us a link to your website, please .

It's usually easier to see what's happening, if we can see the page and check the code.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Many thanks for your prompt rely!   Cheesy  My website is http://pilkingtonfamily.rootschat.net

I haven't finished uploading all the pages yet, but when I checked them so far, there should be a jpeg on the welcome page.   Cry

Also Family Historian  gives a default photo of a tree jpg on the top left of each page, and there is an option to substitute your own picture of 98 pixels or less.  I put in a small jpeg of a heraldic figure.

Many thanks,   Smiley

The problems are possibly in the long file names used for the images and the differences between windows and Unix which the Rootschat server runs on.

Quote
"_h1_The view looking from Rivington Pike towards Chorley cropped.JPG"

is one file name ..... personally I would go for something like img src="view1.jpg" ALT= "The view looking from Rivington Pike Towards Chorley"

The other problem may be the file suffix ..... to windows JPG and jpg are the same thing to a Unix system they are completely seperate entities

Hi Jools,

I've looked on your site and discovered the following:
(right click on the red cross and then click properties)

the names of your image files are
pilkington-crest-small.jpg
and
_h1_The%20view%20looking%20from%20Rivington%20Pike%20towards%20Chorley%20cropped.JPG

the %20 is hexadecimal code for a space, i.e. the name of the file is
"_h1_The view looking from Rivington Pike towards Chorley cropped.JPG"
This is definitely a No-No !!!!

No blanks in file names, please, use underlines instead and call it
"_h1_The_view_looking_from_Rivington_Pike_towards_Chorley_cropped.JPG"

Even better: use only lower case names for all images.
"_h1_the_view_looking_from_rivington_pike_towards_chorley_cropped.jpg"

Even "more better": use shorter names, and put the long description in an ALT-tag
(see Falkyrn's reply and Topic: TIP: Adding images (and 'thumbnails') to web-sites
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,47486.0.html )

I don't know why the first image isn't showing, as the name seems OK but if you have uploaded, for instance,  "Pilkington-Crest-small.JPG" or anything other than the exact name then the browser won't find it.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hello Berlin Bob and Falkyrn

Many thanks for your suggestions.  I'm going to make the file names shorter and try again Smiley

I'll let you know how I get on!

Many thanks,  Kiss
Jools

Hello Berlin Bob and Falkyrn,

I've changed the file names of my jpegs to just one word or two words with an underscore between, but how do I change the file suffix JPEG to jpeg?    Huh

The crest logo is now showing, but only on 3 out of 4 pages!  It should be on all of them.   Angry

I've had a look at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,47486.0.html )  but I don't really understand it all yet Sad

Hi Berlin Bob,

Sorry I don't understand you.  My jpegs are in my documents folder which I just opened and did a file rename.  This doesn't change the suffix.     Windows has automatically given them 'JPG' as a file suffix.  How do I prevent this happening?

Jools.

Hi Jools,

I don't normally use the Windows on-board tools, as I find them cumbersome., but this should do the trick:

If you look at 'extra', 'folder options' in your explorer, and then click on the 'display' tag, you get a list of options.  click on the box to remove the tick on the line 'don't show file extensions' and you should then see the file extension .JPG

And if you can see it, then you should be able to change it, from JPG to jpg

(The menu texts you see may be slightly different, I'm translating from my german operating system  Grin )

Hi Bob,

Brilliant thanks, I've been able to do that, and I've now edited the names of the photos.   Cheesy

I'll have another go at uploading them Smiley

If at first you don't succeed .............!!  I'm learning something every day!

Cheers, Jools  Grin
