Walker Wybunbury
« on: Friday 12 May 06 23:00 BST (UK) »

Hi

If any kind soul out there has access to the parish registers for Wybunbury (particularly Basford, Chorlton and Shavington cum Gresty) then I'd really appreciate a look up for the following baptisms:

Emma Walker 15 Oct 1820
Jane Walker 30 June 1822
Ann Walker 30 Dec 1827
Louisa Walker 6 Oct 1833
Frances Walker 1 Nov 1835
Susannah Walker 17 Mar 1838
Elizabeth Walker 12 Jul 1840
Hannah Walker 14 May 1848

Parents should be Thomas and Hannah Walker.  There are others, but I am particularly interested in Jane 1822 ... what I'm really hoping to find is Hannah's maiden name.

I'd also love to find a marriage for Thomas and Hannah, sometime around 1820.  The family were living in Shavington cum Gresty from the 1841 census onwards.

If anyone recognises any of these names from their own research then I'd love to hear from you.

Forever hopeful ...
Regards Julie

Hi Julie
A Thomas Walker married a Hannah Platt on 16 July 1818 at Wybunbury, which is not very far away from Shavington.

Hopefully Jayson will be able to confirm this from the Parish records, but sometimes the Mother's maiden name is not entered.

Kind regards

Thanks Su

I had found (on the IGI) a marriage between Thomas and Hannah Holland in Norton-in-the-Moors in 1816, but the one you have found does sound more likely.  I too hope that Jayson can shed more light on this branch of my ancestry, as I have been working on it for a long, long time!

Thanks Julie, much better.

I know how you feel...I've been working on Mum's side for a long long long time, and getting nowhere.  As Mum is 92 I was hoping to trace them before she pops off....but the way things are going, she'll find them before I do  Grin

Hi Julie

Below, Julie, are three entries which might be relevant to your WALKER research! I transcribed them from the Wybunbury grave register, held by the County record office in Chester.  The descriptions given are meant to indicate the location of the deceased within the churchyard.  As you can see, some of the descriptions don't seem to make any sense.

Buried on the 9th May 1864: Hanah [sic] Walker upon Aron Shavington Aged 78 head of Paces

Buried Dec 1846: Child of Thos Walker's South of Walker's Stone in Platts burial Aged 8

Buried 19th Oct 1851: Child of Thos Walker's Stocklane South of Walker's Large stone up to King Stone - an infant

I see that Su has located a marriage for Thomas Walker & Hannah Platt, this seems really relevant as the surname Platt is referred to in one of the above grave register extractions.

Hope the above is of interest.  Will speak to you on Thursday with the all important baptisms.

Hi Jayson

Thanks for those graveyard entries.  I thought the Hannah one sounded very promising until I realised that my Hannah was still alive on the 1871 census.

There was a Frances Walker, aged 4 in 1841, that could be the infant aged 8 mentioned in your entries, as I haven't located her on any subsequent censuses.

Eagerly waiting to see if you find anything in the weddings/baptisms...

Hi Julie

I've been able to locate all the entries that you requested.  Thomas and Hannah also had three other children, which didn't appear in your list.  Thomas Walker, a bachelor of the parish of Wybunbury, married Hannah Platt, a spinster of the same parish, on the 16th July 1818 by banns.  Thomas signed his name.  Present at the marriage ceremony were Sarah Platt & Philip Shenton.

Thomas and Hannah Walker had the following children baptised at St Chad's Parish Church, Wybunbury:

2 Jan 1819 WILLIAM s/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Blakenhall, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

15 Oct 1820 EMMA d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Basford, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

30 Jun 1822 JANE d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Chorlton, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

30 Dec 1827 ANN d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Chorlton, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

3 April 1831 MARGARET d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Chorlton, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

6 Oct 1833 LOUISA  d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Chorlton, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

1 Nov 1835 FRANCES d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Chorlton, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

17 Mar 1838 SUSANNAH d/o THOMAS, joiner, & HANNAH WALKER of Shavington, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

12 July 1840 ELIZABETH d/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Shavington, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

2 Oct 1842 THOMAS s/o THOMAS, carpenter, & HANNAH WALKER of Shavington, baptised by Revd James Hayes, curate

12 April 1846 AARON s/o THOMAS, joiner, & HANNAH WALKER of Shavington, baptised by Revd James Hayes, vicar

14 May 1848 HANNAH d/o THOMAS, joiner, & HANNAH WALKER of Shavington, baptised by Revd C [L] Gibbon, curate

Enjoy!!!

All the best - Jayson  Wink

Oh! I also located at Wybunbury the marriage of William Walker, a carpenter, to Margaret Platt (22 Sep 1815).  Both bride and Groom signed the register.  Any relation? There were quite a few couples called Walker having children baptised at the same time as Thomas & Hannah.

Hi Jayson

Thanks ever so much - you're a star!!  Everything seems to fit into place perfectly.  I'm still just a little bit concerned because I have found three marriages in total where a Thomas Walker married a Hannah, one in Norton-in-the-Moors and one in Waverton, all fairly close by.  I suppose if this couple were the only Thomas and Hannah in this particular parish then they must be the right couple as all the children fit with the 1841 census entry.  I have been trying to locate Jane Walker's family for what seems like forever, so again, thank you so much!

It's interesting that a William Walker married a Margaret Platt around the same time - I assume that could indicate that two brothers married two sisters - that will be my next area of research I guess.

Your help has been much appreciated.  If I ever get to visit the records centre myself will I be able to get a copy of the entries?  I've never been to one so I don't know how it works.

Thanks again

Kindest Regards, Julie

Hi Jayson

Yes, I have them through to the 1871, aged 74 and 70 - I have yet to look for their dates of death, but I don't think they made it to the 1881.

Hi Julie,

Yes, the Chester Record Office does have a machine where by a reproduction of a micro-filmed document is obtainable.  It costs 50p per A4 sheet.

You could write to them with the details of what you want copying.  I've done this in the past.  Very useful if you live a long way off.

You say that you have Thomas & Hannah Walker on the census returns up to 1871, do they all agree regarding their place of birth? Were they born in Wybunbury? If so you can discount the Waverton & Norton-in-the-Moors entries.

Hi Jayson

Thanks for the information - I will get in touch with the records office and see if they can send me copies of what I need.

Thomas and Hannah list various places of birth on the census entries - Thomas lists both Hough (?) and Wybunbury and Hannah mentions Blakenhall and possibly Bridgeford (?).  I think these all relate to the Wybunbury area, don't they?

Births for Thomas and Hannah next ... I think I have some definite possibilities from the IGI -
Thomas Walker christened 10 Sep 1797, father John
Hannah Platt christened 24 May 1801, father Joseph
(both Wybunbury).

... so if you visit the office again sometime, your help would be much appreciated!

Thanks again
