Your Edward may have gone abroad before 1881, I cannot find him on the 1881 National Index for the UK, using a surname search (for both surnames "Seymour and Brett").

There are indeed clusters of the surnames Seymour and Brett in Derby. I have searched various names to no avail. However I did find a John Brett who was born around the same time, in Derby, but not the same village you mention, who is a Widow in 1881. If you do want these details just ask.

Thank you for that information. I believe that my Bretts moved around a bit as it appears his father John Gay Brett cames from Bath. If you can pass on what details you mentioned I may make a link with them.
