James Stewart b1844 son of John
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 11:48 UTC (UK) »

I know very little. born in Dumfries.  Appears in 1861 - 1901 Census Swansea
He worked in the Copperworks.  He fought in late 19th C. have a photograph in uniform late 19th c.  Married twice.  He died in 1926.

Any suggestions what to do to start tracing the family in Scotland.  Not sure I have enough info to start using a subscription sites.

On looking at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the official government site, there is no James Stewart listed as born in Dumfries in 1844. However as this was before statutory registration of births (in 1855), this is not uncommon.

There are 27 James Stewart listed as born in 1844.

It costs £6 for 30 credits on the site, so you may find what you are after fairly cheaply ( if he was born aound about Dumfies as opposed to the town itself)

[Moderator: Amended price to say £6 not £60 - that would be a bit steep  Grin ]

Hi David

It's hard researching when you haven't got details of the mother (from English certs.), I sympathise with you. How sure are you of the Dumfries birth place?

The reason I ask is that on looking at IGI on www.familysearch.org and also the free on-line 1851 census for Dumfries and Galloway area at www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx there is one possible James Stewart born in 1844, with father John, except he is born in Wigtown not Dumfries. I've included the details below for you to have as additional options:

From IGI, both entries are submitted records:

JAMES STEWART     Birth: 08 MAY 1844  Christening: 22 MAY 1844 Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: JOHN STEWART Mother: ANN MCMASTER

JOHN STEWART  Marriages: Spouse: ANN MCMASTER
Marriage:  10 DEC 1839  Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland

From the 1851 Census, this is the family. Not sure where father John is but Ann mother and children are with her in-laws:

Bicket Robert, age 8, servant, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Parker Mary, age 17, servant, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart Ann, age 35, daughter-in-law of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart Ann, age 10, granddaughter of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart James, age 6, son of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt (I think this may be your James and should read grandson?)
Stewart Jane, age 2, granddaughter of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart John, age 8, grandson of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart Martha, age 67, wife of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart John, age 67, Miller, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Stewart Martha, age 4, granddaughter of John, born Stoneykirk Wgt
Address: Landmile (898) Parish: Stoneykirk Household No: 2/50

Regards.

Monica

Thank you doing the look up for me, I had seen part of the 1851 entry but not the entire family.
I know the year of birth is correct only because his age on the Censuses and his death certificate is consistent.  The place of birth is from the Census.
He had the following children
Mary Elizabeth Stewart  1872
Eleanor Stewart 1874
Jane Ann Stewart 1875 - 1880
James Stewart 1878
John Edward Stewart 1879 - 1929  [My Grandfather]
Alexander Stewart 1881
Susan Stewart 1883
Arthur Stewart 1885 -   ]  Lived in Swansea
Archibald Stewart  1887 - 1887
Florence Stewart 1888 - 1888

By family history one daughter emigrated to America and was connected to the Armour Meat Company.

But your reply does show what may be possible.

Best wishes
David
