What's a "bad extension"?
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 21:01 BST (UK) »

When I try to upload a family tree file  to my website, I get the message:

"Following file(s) has been uploaded or removed:
File 'INDEX.HTM' have bad extension."

The file was created on a mac using Reunion 8 software which supposedly prepares files that are internet ready. It consists of "web cards" that contain text and photos.

From everthing I've read on RootsChat the INDEX.HTM extension is OK.
Any suggestions?

Hi Donaldsonjc,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

try renaming the file to index.htm (lower case only)

That might help. it's possible that the Linus server doesn't recognise the upper case file name.

Thanks Berlin-Bob

Went back into Reunion 8 and found an option to make all files in lower case as you suggested. Also was prompted to select "Create Flat Web projects (all files in one folder)" which I did.

Then I opened FTP Manager, clicked on "Choose File" and got a list of hundreds of individual files. I chose "index.html" to upload which opened the cover page on my website - great! we're making progress!

However, clicking the buttons for "surnames" and "index" take me back to the RootsChat site. Why?

I don't relish the idea of uploading the other hundreds of my files one at a time. How do I upload all of them together?

You have probably covered this basic stuff in your tutorial or in the forum but I can't find where. Can you steer me in the right direction?

Thanks - John

Hi John,

Most family history programs make lots of HTML files, which means  that you need an FTP program to upload them..

because the "surnames" and "index" pages are not on your site yet, the links should take you back to your home page.

try the Topic: TUTORIAL: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website
6b Using an FTP program
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397246.html#msg397246

and let us know the address of your website, it's usually easier to recognise where the problem lies , when we can see the code.

(I say "we", because although I seem to be always first here so far, there are lots of other helpfull people here.)

Good luck,
Bob

Hi Bob
coffeecup ftp seems to be for windows only so I downloaded Fetch5, an FTP for the Mac.
I used the sdvice in your tutorial to fill in Fetch's New Connection window:

Hostname: jcdonaldson.rootschat.net
Username: jcdonaldson.rootschat.net
Connect using: FTP
Enable encryption: (left this blank)
Password: (same as my website)

and I get the message:

"FTP connection to "jcdonaldson.rootschat.net" could not be opened because the server rejected the password."

Tried the other connection options without success - SFTP, etc.
Thanks for you help.

John
