Hi,
I now know the name of the ship which took my great grandfather's brother and his wife to Victoria, Australia in 1876. I've tried to find out more about her but so far with little success. Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places. Does anyone have any idea where to search? The ship's name was "Marpesia"
Hoping someone can help

Hi, missprim
The photo of MARPESIA http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/brodie/0/0/2/doc/bs002794.shtml
also, there is somebody with interest in this ship:
> Hello Listers, > > I have a passenger list for the "Marpesia" > > Leaves Liverpool May 19th, 1871 - arrives Melbourne August 30th, 1871. > > Note on passenger list...certifies there are enough provisions on board for 25 adults for a voyage of 140 days. Tonnage shows 1443. > > Information gathered indicates: > > MARPESIA, Liverpool, 1514 Tons, Built at Port Glasgow. > > I have some questions: > > Why the discrepancy in tonnage? > > Would the sailing ship take from approx. three months and ten days to arrive in Melbourne, Australia? > > Is there any more info to be acquired through other sources with regard to individual passengers? > > Finally, if anyone wants a copy of this passenger list please advise. > > Thanks all, > > Mervyn Archdall > marchdall@sympatico.ca http://www.oulton.com/cwa/newsships.nsf/0/1a433797546eb25a85256dcb005f7dff?OpenDocument

Hello missprim, Have you looked on the PROV website? If you search their index to unassisted immigrants, you might find your rellies - I had a quick look and the 1876 arrival of the Marpesia is definitely recorded there:
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23
The PROV index of assisted immigrants only goes up to 1871 online - it might be worth contacting them to see whether there are any later ones that are as yet undigitised (that's if you dont' find them in the unassisted bunch above!)
Good luck with your search! Prue

Hi
Thank you Seamike and PrueM. I'll take a look at your suggestions; particularly that other person also interested in the ship.
I found my rellies in a list of unassisted passengers on the PROV web site but then when I wanted to know more about the ship couldn't find anything. I'd really like to know where they embarked from. They were married at Kirk Braddan on the Isle of Man in 1875.

Hi missprim, The actual passenger list will have the port of embarkation on it. If you contact the PROV about it, they will (I'm pretty sure) be able to give you those details. Cheers Prue

Hi Prue,
I had noticed that the end three columns of the PROV on-line table of passengers give the Port and what is obviously a reference to a microfilm copy of a document. However there is no indication about which port that of embarkation or of arrival, there is simply a letter B which must be a code.
I've had another look on the Internet for the ship Marpesia with a bit more success and found a reference to a book which apparently has a description of the ship so will try to track that down.
Once again thanks for the help.

Hi missprim, I think the 'B' stands for "British" indicating the ship originated at a British port. Very helpful (not!) Cheers Prue

Hi,
I was wondering if Liverpool would be the post of departure but understand that not many ships went from there to Australia. Liverpool's trade being mostly across the Atlantic.

Hi
Next time I go to the Library I'll check the passenger list for you. See what other information it holds.
Probably going this Sunday.
Just let me know the family name.
Cheers
Genni
