Not sure if this refers to his regiment...right place, right time...

"On May 8, 1912, Colonel Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia and Defense, visited Sherbrooke to confer with local militia commanders on the development of the Old Court House as an armoury for the 53rd Regiment. Repairs were conducted and a drill shed was added. The new installation became available to the unit in March 1914. "

Thank you, I didn't have that DND link for Sherbrooke. Durban served in both 2nd Boer War and WWI. I was able to get information from his WWI file. He is on the 1910 US census as he lived in the States before moving to Canada. I doubt he will be found on the 1911 Canada census as he is in the US as late as Nov 1910. I think he might have moved to Canada when he enlisted.
For WW1 service Durban enlisted as you found. He departed Montreal and arrived in England on S.S. Cameronia May 20, 1915. He was assigned to R.D.G. Squadron, Battery Company QRD and embarked for Folkestone, France Sept. 15, 1915. On Apr 11, 1916 he was attached for temporary duty with 2nd Canadian Tunnelling Company. Durban went missing since the German attack at Armagh Wood June 2, 1916. He was officially documented as a POW July 12, 1916 at Dulmen. Sept 27, 1916 he was recorded at West Phalia. Oct 10, 1916 unofficially recorded as at Kottbus and officially reported Dec 17, 1917. He was transfered Mar 8,1918 to Gerflas Grossen Alvdor and Mar 13, 1918 he was transfered to Kottbus. He was released Jan 8, 1819 at Dover Rest Camp, England and repatriated same day. Then on furlough in Ripon Jan 9 to Mar 9, 1919. He saw a chest specialist at Ripon Mar 13, 1919 for chronic cough, fever and chest pains. He embarked Liverpool on S.S. Lapland Apr 3, 1919. It was noted in his file to notify his wife as next of kin and also W. Kirby Waite 179 Spence St., Winnipeg, Man. (This is where I first learned there might be family in Canada)
Interestingly, Durban's dad served with the 7th Hussars out of England and that Sherbrooke URL has hussars.

Just to update. Finally got around to checking the James you found and from what I see he doesn't appear to be William & Louisa's son.
1878 James Kirby Towcester
Looks like this James was born Silverstone of parents James & Mary Ann Waite.
England 1881 Census, RG11/Piece 1534/Folio 110/p.20
England 1901 Census, RG13/Piece 1414/Folio 84/p.25
Registration district for Silverstone appears to be Towcester
Interesting the Kirby name reference though.

I know your email is quite old but I just came across it - I believe we are related. My maternal grandfather was one Durbin Kirby Waite from England - he immigrated to near Boston as you said and he married a Swedish lady (my maternal grandmother) Elina Elvira Aman (Ohman) whom I did a history on about 3 yrs ago for my mother's 90th Bday. My grandmother and grandfather moved to Sherbrooke Quebec and that is where my mother was born. My Mother's Aunt (Elina's sister) married and moved to Vermount and had children there.
