JARDINE, Canonbie.
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 11:51 UTC (UK) »

Does anyone researching JARDINE hold any info on Janet JARDINE or her parents & siblings. She was b, abt 1778, Canonbie. She was the wife (marriage abt 1805/6 & probably unregistered) of Andrew RUTHERFORD, b 1773 Halfmorton, DFG.

Janet appears as a RUTHERFORD on the 1841 census age 60 & is living with Andrew & their family. Location: Annan Outskirts. Address: Bincherbeck, & again upon the 1851 census age 73 - Parish: Hoddam, Address: Beckhead, Bridekirk. This time living with her daughter Helen RUTHERFORD & family.

Any help in demolishing my Brickwall greatly appreciated... & Regards.

Hi Graitney

There is an IGI entry, extracted record from OPRs:

JANET JARDON  Christening:  29 MAR 1778   Canonbie, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents: Father: JAMES JARDON

There is also a submitted entry for what looks like Janet and Andrew Rutherford's first child:

JAMES RUTHERFORD  Birth: 14 SEP 1806  Christening: 18 SEP 1806 Half Morton, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents: Father: ANDREW RUTHERFORD Mother: JANET JARDINE

From what I can see, Andrew's father was Walter (?). If so, the entry above for a Janet's christening with James for father looks good if they followed Scottish naming patterns.

Purely speculative, from the use of the name of Helen both with Jardine entries and Rutherford on IGI, I wondered if this could be the name of her mother. It's a pity only the father's name was used on the OPRs.

There is an IGI entry for a marriage of a James Jardine and Helen on IGI, actual extract from OPRs:

JAMES JARDON  Marriages: Spouse: HELEN COWAN
Marriage:  02 FEB 1770  Canonbie, Dumfries, Scotland

There is an entry on IGI for the christening of a Helen Cowan in Canonbie in 1748.

Finally, given that it would appear that Janet Jardine died between 1851-54, you should probably try to find her MI.  Dumfries, as I understand, has most of its gravestones transcribed.

Regards.

Hello Monica,

Thanks so much for replying......Having looked at the entries you suggest, I am inclined to think that your assumptions are quite correct regarding Janet & her parentage.

You are also correct in assuming that Andrew's RUTHERFORD's father was Walter (whose father in turn was Andrew), so they did to a degree historically adhere to the naming pattern's but not wholly so with their offspring of which they had seven (that I have discovered...so far), including James 1806. However that said, the name Helen does also appear amoungst these too, so your speculation may be spot on.

Thanks once again & Regards............Graitney.

Hi

I wonder if we've already beein in touch elsewhere. The people you're talking about are my ancestors. I'm descended from the daughter Helen who you've mentioned. As far as Janet's parent's are concerned I have also traced then as James Jardine and Helen Cowen and have two brothers for her Andrew 1788 (big gap there so she probably have more siblings in between) and Joh 1793.
How are yopu connected to this family?

Regards,

Katrina
