1841 Census for Hants, Andover or St. Mary Bourne re WOODS
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 17:16 BST (UK) »

I am in search of James WOODS on the 1841 Census for Hampshire.  He should appear with his wife,  Sarah.   He may appear as a "gardener" if the occupation is shown on the census.   I am hoping there are children appearing with them.  James' birth date would be about 1792 and Sarah's would be about 1799.

Thank you for any help.
Joan.

Hi Joan

Welcome to RootsChat.

I can't help with the census myself, but these baptism show up in Andover with the parents James and Sarah Woods:

Henry Tamlyn bapt 13 Feb 1831 buried 12 Aug 1831
George Frederick bapt 26 May 1833
Edward Tamlyn bapt 7 Sep 1834
Benjamin bapt 23 Apr 1837 buried 17 Jun 1837
Elizabeth Jane bapt 21 Feb 1839

And the marriage:
James Woods m Sarah Tamlyn 12 Jul 1829 Andover
NB James was a widower.  His first wife may have been Elizabeth who was buried 5 Jul 1826 age 34

James may have been the son of Benjamin and Sarah Woods, baptised Andover 27 Jul 1792.
Sarah may have been baptised outside the range of the records I can access here.

Hope this helps you.

 Nell....

I did have two of the children, Henry Tamlyn and Elizabeth Jane but I did not have any of the others.   You have also proven for me that his first wife was Elizabeth, who was actually my 4th-great-grandmother.   She is definitely the Elizabeth I had.

You have made my day!!   You have filled such a huge gap for me and I thank you so very much.

Best regards,
Joan.

Hi Alli:

Once again, Rootschatters have come through for me.  How I wish I had happened on this site ages ago.

With the 1841 Census, it confirms that George and Edward are still alive in 1841.  I have a fairly good hold on Elizabeth Jane and Henry Ball.  His  parents were George Ball and Harriett Noyes.  I have a friend in the U.S. who has found all the censuses for me from 1861 onward.  I've accessed the 1901 census myself and EJ is still alive and living at the Ball family home in Andover.   Just as an aside, she had several children with a man who was, apparently, in prison for most of their married life.   It looks like on each his times "outside"  they had another child. Undecided

So glad you mentioned that John was, indeed, Elizabeth's son and living with them.

I have to say that I have found out more in the past two days from Nell and Alli than I have found out in the past 6 months.

By the way, is St. Mary Bourne the correct parish for these births/baptisms?

Thank you so much, Alli, for your help.   It is sincerely appreciated from this Canadian.

Best regards
Joan.
