William Foster (b c1857 Brighton)
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 22:23 BST (UK) »

One of my ancestors was William Foster, born about 1857 in Brighton. Son of William And Sarah.

Also born in Brighton in 1857 was William Foster, son of Ann & Samuel.   Roll Eyes  Huh

In 1861 & 1871, they are both at home with the families.
In 1881 one William is Head of a household- wife Fanny, with daughter Rose E,. Same on 1891 census with additional daughter Fanny E.  Roll Eyes

I can't see another William Foster in 1881/1891. Is getting the marriage certificate the only way to check if this is my William or not? (ie father will be stated as either William or Samuel).  Undecided

Ideas / help welcomed

Thanks

Hi

If it were me I would get the marriage certificate, then you know for sure you are tracing the right one.

Hi Nicky,

yeah, but as per Murphy's law - you can bet that it'll not be my William, so could be a costly exercise.

Cheers,

Have just found the death record for the other William Foster b1858 d 1880.

do I go for the death cert or the marraige cert, which will have most info?

Hi tulstig
With the death cert you will get, date and place of death, occupation, cause of death, the informant and informants details, that might only give a name and a relationship though and could turn out to be a doctor or someone unrelated.

With the wedding cert you should at least be able to confirm the father of both bride and groom - not much point having the death cert if you still cannot confirm Williams father.

Thanks Suey,

Looks like it's time to bite the bullet and buy the marriage certificate.
