Hello Izabel
long shot here but may i take up your kind offer.
My great grandfather served in India and south Africa, I believe with the East Lancashire Regiment. His name was John Owens. From Liverpool
He was with the 1st Battalion of the east Lancashire regiment in ww1 as a private and his number was 7021

This is a picture of him. i am told the uniform is that of the East Lancashire regiment.
This is all i have to go on sorry so not sure if its enough for a find.
Many Thanks
Anthony.

Hi Anthony !
Heres a bit of background on the beginning of the Boer War and the East Lancs!!
At the outbreak of the South African War in October 1899 there seemed little prospect that the 1st Battalion of the East Lancs ( the old 30th Foot ) would share in the campaign - the regiment had recently arrived in Jersey for a tour of garrison duty at Fort Regent and were not included in the mobilisation ! The East Lancs had returned to England for Burma in December 1897 after seventeen years of foreign service having sailed to India in January 1880 - the most notale incidents in their long Eastern tour had been a terrible cholera epidemic at Lucknow in 1894 when 93 of the regiment died!
On December 19th 1899 the East Lancs marched to embark at St Helier amidst much fanfare and excitement!!They boarded the SS Vera by companies
The 1st Battalion were replenished with 600 more men from all over Lancashire -they went to Aldershot for training and with great fanfare left Aldershot to Southampton and boarded SS Bavarian - the strength of the Battalion was 25 officers 1 Warrant officer 39 sergeants 15 drummers and 891 rank and file!!
It might be worth getting the war diaries also for WW1 - some Regiments are available from TNA or you could get onto the War Forum and ask if anybody can look them up for you - but you'd need to sort out dates etc !!
Annie
PS I'll look up the battles they were engaged in during the Boer War!

OK, don't know how clear this is going to be but it's the best I could do, it's John Owens Medal Card for Hogan, I think he wants somebody to translate what it all means.
