can someone advise what is the best size of picture to post for restoration?

Marion,
      Scan your pic' at 600 dpi in full colour. If the resulting image is over the 500k limit for posting you will have two choices, the easiest is to save it as a jpeg with a compression rate that will bring it down as close to but not over 500k - do not worry how big the picture looks on the screen, believe me - we like 'em big. If you still can't get it down to size you may go to this site http://www.yousendit.com/ and then come back here and post the link for your pic.
