Hi, please can someone help?
I have so far traced my Ellis line back to a John and Frances, living in Burwash, Sussex, marrying around 1736. They had several children, most of whom did not live more than two years. Of those that survived were William, and John Bexil (or Bexhill).
In the LDS database I've found a John Ellis christened in September, 1703, with parents Robertus and Marcy. However, another LDS record shows John's birth date as "about 1711".
Please can anyone tell me if Robert(us) and Marcy (Mercy?) were 'my' John Ellis' parents? Of if there's another generation in between?

This is John & Frances' marriage:
Heathfield, East Sussex, 25 Sep 1736:
John ELLIS, Burwash m Frances BECKSHILL, Hellingly (lic)
If Robert & Mercy are his parents, this is their marriage:
Burwash, East Sussex 19 Apr 1692
Robert ELLIS m Mercy GILHAM
Records which say "about" should only be used as a guide. It can only mean that someone is guestimating the birth date from other information e.g. age when he might have married. The exact date with a batch number etc is extracted from parish records. Robert & Mercy had 6 children as far as I can see in Burwash, the last being baptised in 1706. It would be difficult to see how another generation could possibly fit in. While John may have seemed old at 33 (if he is their son) to marry, that is not that old. You can only find the proof you want by perhaps finding a will left by Robert which refers not only to John but perhaps his wife Frances as well.

On my visit to the East Sussex Record Office today, I found the following in the Burwash Registers:
Baptism
September 23rd 1703, Ellis John, son of Robert & Mercy
I also found the following baptisms:
Nov 17th 1700, Ellis Robert, son of Robert & Mercy
Mar 20th 1707, Ellis Mercy, daughter of Robert & Mercy
and this in the marriages:
19th April 1692, Robert Elia and Mercy Gillam
