To add the web counter you'll need to edit the source code of the index page for your web site.
Once you get into the source code scroll to the end of the page just before the </body> section of the coding and insert the piece of coding supplied by trystan
Code:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript" SRC="http://counter.rootschat.net/counter.php?page=YOURUSERNAME"><!--
//--></SCRIPT>
of course replacing the phrase YOURUSERNAME with your actual user name.
Save and exit ..... if you have done this offline (ie on a file held on your own computer) you will need to upload this changed index file to your web space ... in exactly the same manner as you did previously.

Instant Changes unfortunately when you load a new version of a web page the older version is still in the caches system (stored memory) of the web server and will continue to be displayed until the web computer refreshes this  .... this can sometimes happen in minutes in others hours it all depends on where you are in the computer cycle of operations
Another area to check is the cache on your own computer ... right click on the Internet Explorer icon select properties and then temporary internet files and settings there is a setting "check for newer versions of the page" ..... you could set this to "every visit" which will help

replacing the phrase YOURUSERNAME with your actual user name.

just looked on your page.  You forgot to put the name of your website here:
Code:
SRC="http://counter.rootschat.net/counter.php?page=YOURUSERNAME"

this should read:
Code:
SRC="http://counter.rootschat.net/counter.php?page=bellfamilyscotland"

Have you removed your background or not??  I've just looked at your home page and there is no background. I know you had one yesterday. Smiley

Looking at the source of your home page (the first one we see) much of the html code has gone from the start and end while it remains on your adjoining pages

Code:
<HTML><HEAD>
<title>Index of Names</title>
<BASEFONT FACE="Arial" SIZE="1" COLOR="#000000">

<script language='javascript' src='http://127.0.0.1:1027/js.cgi?aw&r=20537'></script>

</HEAD>
<BODY background="H0B0.jpg">

this is from one of your linked pages and something similar will need to be added to your home page at the top

and at the botttom bottom of the source something like
Code:
</body>
</html>

I must remember to check spelling before I post  Grin

That's computers for you ...

Just a tip , you may like to make a couple of copies of your website and keep them on your harddrive ....that way when a change doesn't work out as you expected you can copy over one of the copy files and start again. If the site is in a folder on your computer just right click with the mouse ,hold the mouse button down and move to a blank area in that window release the mouse button and you will be asked if you want to move or copy the file select copy and the machine will do the rest for you.

Hi Falkyrn,

Thanks for the tip I tried to copy the ftp file in the file manager and paste it to the desktop in a new folder, but the paste didnt highlight so i couldnt do it.
I have a program called Relatively Yours 3 as my geneolgy progam which I used to upload the files into ftp manger to make my web page it was very straight forward to do, but cannot figure out how to save the web page into a folder. any suggestions on this.

thanks

Sorry I've never used that program.

However most of these programs give the option to publish locally if available this will allow you to "publish" the web site to your own hard drive.

Or Ii the FTP program you are using is a seperate program itself you can download a copy of your website from your webspace and save this on your hard drive.

Hi Falkyrn,

You will be glad to know I went out and  bought a book 2day called Web Publishing for Dummies (me)!!!

I have only read a few pages so far, but some of the HTML stuff is staring to make a bit of sense, I'm still trying to figure out how to put back my background but because I didn't understand the way the page is set out in HTML I was having problems understanding what you where trying to explain to me about what was missing, but now I still don't know but don't feel so stupid and feel that after reading a bit more and referring to your notes I will be able to work it out. (hopefully).

Thanks again for your help Cheesy

PS are u in the UK and if so do you know how to get copies of death cert for Scotland pre 1855 (which before that date is not on Scotland's people) I'm still trying to find the 1700 generation but cannot find anything with his parents names on it to go futher back. His name was James Bell and Married Elisabeth Snaddon in Bo'ness 22nd Nov 1819
