1841 Census Hindon Area

Would someone be so kind as to check the 1841 census for Richard and Ann Marshment.  They got married in 1809 but unfortunately I do not know their dates of birth.  It might be that they had died by this time but if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Hello Ricky

Thank you very much for checking the censuses for me.  Unfortunately, the only offspring I know of Richard and Ann is called William and he was married on 1841 census.  There is a possibility of a daughter Mary who was christened in 1825 (from FamilySearch) but as she is not listed, nor is Ann (his wife), I am unsure whether this is my Richard Marshment.  I have kept this information in my file and I will try and do a bit more digging.  If I can confirm this is mine then you have helped me tremendously with all the information.

Many thanks for the additional information - looks like this could be my 'family', Ann having died by time of 1841 census.  Have found marriage of Elizabeth and Charles Targett on Family Search so will do some more checking on that site for rest of family.

Digging up an old thread here...

But I am also researching this family. 

Richard and Ann were also the parents of a daughter named Ann (b. about 1812) who went on to marry Leonard Baker in East Knoyle, Wilshire on 7 May 1835.

I see from the original poster that Richard married Ann in 1809.  I haven't been able to find this record on line anywhere?  I really wanted to know what Ann's maiden name was before she married Richard. If Zephyr is still about - do you know?

By the way, he is called "Richard Marchment" on the details of Ann's christening on LDS.  Seems to be one of those sirnames that gets changed a lot!

I see Krisesjoint has given you marriage of Richard and Ann.  It is on the IGI under Marshment.  As you say, the spelling can vary - even on the censuses.

Many thanks to Krisesjoint for the additional information on their offspring - very helpful with the dates of baptism.

I've done transcriptions of marriages at East Knoyle 1837-1908 and the only MARCHMENT mentioned is:

20 Apr 1840 William MARCHMENT, full age, widower, labourer, of Hindon, father Richard MARCHMENT labourer
                     Mary DYER full age, spinster, of Hindon father deceased (not named)
Witneses: William VINCENT, Sarah SMALL

No MARCHMENT mentions in the witnesses either - there were some similar names MARSHALL MERCHANT and the ever-present (in that parish) MAIDMENT.


The register book has the following statement:
   Up to ys date Hindon marriages cd be somemnized only in East Knoyle Church. This privelege together with ye *charge of Hindon Parish, was relinquished voluntarily by Rector Crosbie Morgell who was inducted April 1848   

This explains why there are baptisms and burials at Hindon but no marriages until 1848.  I don't know when that arrangement began.  Having visited the area a month ago I reckon it would be quite a long hilly walk to E Knoyle in your wedding finery!

Many thanks Krisesjoint for all your help, it is much appreciated.  As I live up in Yorkshire I can't really get down to Wiltshire to look up parish records so all help is very much appreciated.

Judith - many thanks for your input, too.  You have me wondering now, as I have William Marshment marrying a Maria Dyer on 8.6.1840.  I shall have to check my written notes to see where I got that date from!  However, you have come up trumps as I didn't have the information that he was a widower.  The only other puzzle is that you say Mary's father was deceased at time of marriage.  I have William and Maria living with a Joseph Dyer, Blacksmith, on 1841 census.  Confusing!  I shall have to recheck 1841 census in case I have read it wrong - always a possibility.
