a Question of age
« on: Thursday 18 May 06 20:15 BST (UK) »

In the absence of Birth Cert, which is the most reliable way to determine age of our Ancesters, Death Cert, Marriage Cert or Census, because the ages of my relys vary between  certs I am finding it impossible to get  a birth cert for one of them, any suggestions welcome. Smiley

All of them!!!!

My 3x gt grandma was  aged 59 in 1851.
By 1861 she was 75 and in 1871 she was 87!

By the time she died in 1876 she had reached the grand old age of 91.  I think she was only 88. but can't prove it yet.

A great great grandma on my father's side was aged 8 in 1861, but 19 when she married in 1869.  In 1871 she was 20; in 1881 - 34; in 1891 - 40.  She died in 1899 aged 47.  Still haven't quite managed to pin down the birth certificate except that she was born after the 1851 census was taken!

I think you have to take every scrap you can find to help you out.  Smiley

mallow,

It might help if you can find their baptismal records.  Some give dates of birth, too.

My g-g-grandmother was listed by the wrong given names and ages in the census as a child and then at some point in adulthood she shaved at least five years off her age.  (Was it because my g-g-grandfather was about five years her junior?)

But her baptismal record listed her age at baptism and I think that's my surest bet.

Regards,
Josephine

mallow,

I wish there was some way I could help you.  Sorry!

If, after a while, no one on Rootschat is able to do a look-up for you at the Staffordshire Record Office, perhaps someone on Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness might be able to help.

http://www.raogk.com/

Failing that, it might be worth your while to request the research service that is offered (for a fee) by the Staffordshire Record Office:

http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/StaffordshireRecordOffice/

Good luck!
