Hi, I am trying to find James Smith with his wife Mary ann and son Thomas, Thomas was born in 1845 & James about 1826, I think they came from Mid Yell, Shetland but not sure. Please could you search the 1851 & 1861 Census for me, Many Thanks.

The 1851 and the 1861 census ( and the 1841) are avaiable on the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk website. this is a pay per view site but you can get copies of the relevant records. I have not checked to see if Shetland is covered in these censuses but give it a look.

You mention that Thomas Smith was born in 1845. 
The index of Scotlands People for the 1851 Census of Shetland shows the following possibles:-

    5 year old -  3 matches:  1 Dunrossness
                                            1 Lerwick
                                            1 Unst

    6 year old -  0 matches.

   Isles.
