Quinn & McSorley - Can anyone help me please?
« on: Friday 19 May 06 08:42 UTC (UK) »

I have received a copy of a marriage certificate (RC) from Queensland.  James Quinn born 1839 married Mary Galway (born 1845 County Carlow) in 1866 in Ipswich, Australia.

On the marriage cert. it states that James Quinn was born in County Tyrone and the names of his parents are:

James Quinn (Farmer)
Catherine McSorley

Would anyone please be able to advise me on where I should look next for information on both James Quinn (Snr) and his wife Catherine McSorley......I have no idea on what to do next.  Many thanks.  Karen

Hiya Karen,

This site http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php shows extracts from Griffiths Valuation of Co. Tyrone which took place in 1851. James Quinn (Farmer) should appear as there are quite a number of guys called James on the list. There is also a lengthy list of McSorleys. This next site will make your task slightly easier but not much http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm It shows that Quinns and McSorleys lived in the same parish in Co. Tyrone.

I suggest you look at all the guys named James and at the McSorleys. Make a note of the Parishes where both names appear and then, if you find several common parishes, start the slow process of elimination.  Post your findings and if you are unable to visit PRONI yourself some kind soul may assist you by looking through the relevent records.

All the Best, Chris
