Low Fell cemetery, anyone know it?
« on: Wednesday 20 October 04 11:13 BST (UK) »

Just found out that my grandfather is buried in Low Fell cemetery (in 1939). Before I make plans to try and visit, I wondered if anyone familiar with the area could tell me how big it is (if huge, I will need to allow more time to search) and whether or not it took any significant bomb damage during the war.

Many thanks

Hi Nick

I think that the cemetery you may be looking for is known as Saltwell Cemetery and is located opposite the gorgeous Saltwell Park.  If you google for Saltwell Road South you can locate it.  Here are the details:

Saltwell Cemetery
Saltwell Rd, Gateshead, NE8 4TQ
Tel: 0191-477 1659

Hope this is what you're after!!

It's many, many years since I lived in the area, but I had a distinct feeling that Low Fell was at the south end of Gateshead and that Saltwell was more towards the west, in the general direction of Blaydon. Is that right or have I got it totally wrong>

hi,

Saltwell and Low Fell are more or less the same area. Blaydon is a bus ride away to the north-west.

Hi.

It's Swalwell that is near Blaydon. Saltwell and Low Fell are next door to each other.
