Maker Parish Records - ELWORTHY
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 07:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me. I've traced some of my family back to a village called Maker in Cornwall/Devon, but I can't find any death/burial records for these people, which is vital for me in order to go back any further.

Basically, I've found my ggg...grandfather John Elworthy, who lived in Thames Ditton Surrey, to have been born in Stoke Dameral (modern day Devonport?) in 1769, and his parents to be William Elworthy and Joanna Tilly. The family then seem to have moved to Maker, and had two more children, Sophia and Elizabeth. Marriage records for the daughters show them to still be living there in 1790. The son John seems to have moved to Surrey on his own, and then gone on to have his family, of which I've been able to trace quite thoroughly.

If anyone has the time and resources, could you look at the death/burial records for Maker and surrounding area to see if you can find William and Joanna for me? or of anyone can advise me on what I could do?

I don't normally like to trouble other people, but there is such a lack of decent burial records on line. I believe the records are held at the North Devon Record Office. I've tried to find copies on microfiche of the parish records for Maker, but they don't seem to exist, or at least are not on sale.

Thanks for reading this, I hope someone can help.

Hi
Firstly Maker is in Cornwall so the records would not be held at the North Devon Record Office but at the Cornwall Record office in Truro.
Maker Church (St Mary and St Julian) covered the villages of Maker, Millbrook, Cawsand, Kingsand amongst others.
The Cornwall Family History Society have indexed a lot of the gravestones from Maker Church and might be able to help you. Their website is www.cornwallfhs.com
Also as Maker is only just over the border form Plymouth some of them were taken to Stoke Damerell for burial.
You might also like to contact the online Parish Clerk for Rame. (the name of the whole area) who might be able to assist you.
Hope this helps
