Hi

I have a Liza Picard book about life in Victorian London 1840-1870. This was a peak time for my London ancestors.

I need to get hold of one or two of those Liza Picard books - particularly the one on Victorian London!

Couple of books (might not fit in the time frame, but are a good read)
Forgive me if you know of them already.
They are:-

'Years of Grace: a biographical story of rural England 1893-1973' , Phyllis Crossfield, Hallamshire Press,
Sheffield, 1994.

Benjamin Rushton: Handloom Weaver & Chartist' (1785-1853), John H Hargreaves, Halifax, 2006.

'Mill Girl: my diary of Eliza Helsted, Manchester 1842-1843', Sue Reid, Scholastic, 2002. (NB this is fiction based upon the same format as Mary Barton [Elizabeth Gaskell], Hard Times [Charles Dickens], Sybil [Benjimin Disreali] etc

Hi

The Liza Picard one is very informative and helpful. It has a few images in the centre pages and one is an 1851 map of London.

Hi, I too am in to the social history side of genealogy and am intersted in wages, clothes, pastimes etc etc.  I have been recommended a book called a source book of social history by J Turrall (Turrell).  Also out of print.  I have tried various sources wth no luck, so if anyone knows where I could get it I would be very pleased, Many thanks Pat.

Regarding the first book mentioned in this thread "Useful Toil edited by John Burnett".

I have just received my copy and can recommend it for a fascinating look at life in the 19th century.  I have just spent an entire afternoon engrossed in these wonderful biographies.  Thank you for posting about it Biker, even if long ago!

Having found this thread I have got the book out of our local library so far it is keeping me away from moving dust around the house and endless piles of ironing. I think it is a great insight into the occupations we find on the censuses. .
I would like to also add the autobiography of a lady who was born in 1903 up in the crowded  back to back courts of Birmingham "The Girl from Hockley by Kathleen DAYUS  Virgo Press 2006 It kept me enthralled and full of memories of the things my mother told be about her childhood just a few streets away although mum was born 10 years later. It tells of life with all the warts and joys.
Thank you for pointing me in the direction of useful Toil
