help !

Looking for paternal grandmothers birth.

Family story is that she was born to an unmarried domestic servant, fathered by one of the sons of the wealthy household, said to be in Bucks area poss Berkhampstead 7/5/1889.

Mothers name thought to be Griffiths.  Later adopted and name was then Mary Ann Atkins, (known as Alice).  Cannot find birth under any combination of names, Is there any chance of finding adoption records Huh I know that 2/6d was sent each week to her adoptive parents for her keep but don't know where from.


Is this my brick wall ?? Undecided

Any suggestions welcome

Hi Babs

There were no formal adoptions prior to 1927 when records were started for them.  They were likely to be within the extended family and no formal paperwork/certificates were ever kept.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Sad  Unless there was some sort of court order made regarding her upkeep, but it sounds as if this might not be the case, this may stay as your brick wall.

Have you found her on both the 1891 and 1901 Census?

If so, under what combination of names and what place of birth?

Cannot find her anywhere on census.

May have a cousin who might have more info, will try and contact him.

adoption records were my one hope... never mind ...never give up.

No, don't give up. I solved an 86-year old mystery. That was not expected, at all!

I think that others have had similar experiences, so you just never know from where the bolt of lightning will come Grin
