34 Brook Street - hotel name?
« on: Sunday 21 May 06 13:10 BST (UK) »

I have an ancestor who worked at a hotel at 34 Brook street, in 1881.
Does anyone know what it was called?  Huh
Thanks

Hello

I'm assuming the one you mean is in Mayfair (St Georges Hanover Square District), as you give very little information from which to go on.

Brook Street was fairly famous from fairly posh smaller hotels (the buildings are high 4 or 5 story town houses built I think in the Georgian era, very handsome and still exist though it seems 34 is now a wine bar).

You might try www.historicaldirectories.org to search either under the street name or the proprietor.

Thanks Biker, have tried your suggestion, but could not find anything.

I'm afraid I can't give more information as I don't know London and was rather hoping someone who did would put me in the right direction as you have done.

It looks like it would have been a smaller hotel from the amount of staff there, didn't realise I had someone working in such a posh area!

Thanks for the info you have given.

A quick search of the Times Digital Archive for advertisements between 1875 and 1885 for '34, Brook Street' shows up Symond's Hotel at this address. It also appears that the hotel was run by a Miss Clark, alt least in 1885.
