I'm now working on hubby's family tree and have been told that his great grandmother's brother emigrated to South Africa. (another brother went to the USA)
I know as fact he was Lewis or Louis John Haig born 3rd July 1883 in Inverleithen, near Peebles, Scotland. His parents were Adam Alexander Haig and Julia Coleman nee Aaronson.
We believe he married a Gladys but don't know when or where this was. We also believe he worked in the wool trade when he moved to S Africa.
The last piece of info I have been able to find is him listed on the 1901 census in Edinburgh living with his mother.
Can anyone help with when he went to S. Africa? Or point me in the right direction?
Thanks

hi there, This is what I have found from the Transvaal archives: This means he died in 1960 and wife was still surviving at that stage. I would suggest that you apply to the archives and quote all the info given below they may forward you the details contained in the death notice( usually including children) Please read the primers on genealogyworld.net for more info - especially Rosemarys one on gaining the most out of estate files. unfortunately I can find no death notice for Gladys. DEPOT TAB SOURCE MHG TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 0 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 3888/60 PART 1 DESCRIPTION HAIG, LEWIS JOHN. STARTING 19600000 ENDING 19600000 REMARKS SURVIVING SPOUSE GLADYS DOROTHEA EILLEEN HAIG.
I Know it's been a while since the replies to my original post but I am just going back over some detail in this part of the family.
I am not sure that the information you give is correct or I have made a mistake previously!
I have recently been given information that Lewis was cremated on 26th July 1969 @ Braamfontein Crematorium, South Africa.
Which would mean he had been dead for 10 years unless I have copied the date wrong!
I also believe he was a Freemason from the obituary my husband's uncle has.
