Hazelwood in the Forest of Duffield book
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 08:55 BST (UK) »

Apparently my GGUncle Herbert Swift wrote a book called "Hazelwood in the Forest of Duffield" after his retirement as the Stationmaster there. It was published in 1931 does anyone know if it's ever been reprinted or if any libraries have a copy? I'm coming up to Derbyshire on Saturday for the Family History Fair and wondered if there was any chance I'd find a copy.

Thanks,
Martyn

Thank you for that, I'll have a look. I tried "googling" it but found nothing. I have no idea what was meant by published, it could have been he had a 12 copies printed or there may have been a full run. I've also no idea if it's a 20 page bocklet or a full size book but I'm just curious.

For another occasion Google

Out print books

Lots of sites where you can search for out of print books will then pop up

Always worth searching  Amazon as well as you'll often find books you want on Marketplace

Thank you Jan, I have e-mailed ukbookworld to see if they still have it. It would be interesting to see if he mentions much  (anything) about his family but even if it's just about where they lived at the time they were there it would be interesting and apparently there are 70 pages to it.

Thanks again,

Yes I hope so it would be very interesting, I’ve had an e-mail to say that they are having a look for it in storage, I guess it may not be a hot seller these days but I’d enjoy having a copy. My old English teacher would say that it disproved genetics! She gave me a dictionary when I left school saying I should have been issued with one on the National Health, thank goodness for PC’s with spell checkers! Smiley

I’ll let you know if I get it and a synopsis of what it contains in case there are people that have connections to Hazelwood that may be interested in any information that it contains.

Herbert Swift sounded an interesting man he took over from his father as stationmaster at Hazelwood. His father Anthony was the first Stationmaster there and 24 years later when he died Anthony took over for the next 40 years during which time he also set up a coal merchant business adjoining the station and apparently when milk deliveries were stopped to the area he set up shipments on the trains. He apparently had four management cadets train under him two of which either headed or were very high up in Midland Railways and at least one was knighted. He wrote the book after he retired. His three brothers also worked for Midland / LMS Railways including Andrew that after other stations ended as the Worksworth Stationmaster. Another Brother, Anthony, ended up as a Stationmaster at Ashchurch near Tewkesbury and when I moved down here I used to have a house a few hundred yards from the station without realising that I had any family connections down here. Two of their sisters married railway men and just one daughter was a rebel and had no railway connections but she ended up married to a gamekeeper just outside Cheltenham where I now work, small world!

All the best,
Martyn

Smiley I've just got off the phone with the book shop and they did still have it and they said they will post it first class tomorrow so it should arrive on Friday or Saturday while I'm up in Buxton at the Family History Fair, looks like this weekend could be a good one for looking into my Derbyshire roots!

Thanks for the help.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the web address the book was waiting for me when I got home from work today. It is very interesting to me and has a lot of information about people who had lived in Hazelwood and the farms around it.

I will visit the Church yard at Hazelwood during my visit to Derbyshire tomorrow to see if he is buried there, I feel sure he will be. I would then know when he died and if the book is still covered by copyright. If it's not I may well scan it and put it up on the Internet so that people looking for information about people who lived in Hazelwood prior to 1931 could look them up. Meantime if anyone has a relative that may be covered post a message and I'll see if I can find them.

All the best,
Martyn

I've just found what I am sure is "my" Herbert's death and it was in the last quarter of 1941 so that means 2012 before I could scan it without risking an angry cousin saying I broke their copyright on the first meeting! But I'll gladly do look ups if anyone people are researching were mentioned in the book, just let me know.

Hi Jan,

You did not have a W.H. Allsopp in your family that may have been a publican did you? I've now made the book into a searchable pdf file and put Allsopp in it and found a list of the landlords of the "Puss in Boots" Inn in the parish of Windley and W.H. Allsopp was listed. Apparently it was known as "The Cat" to locals and was near the Hazelwood railway station on the boarder between the Hazelwood and Windley parishes. There isn't any more about W.H. Allsop but a bit quite a bit about the history of the Inn so if there is a connection let me know and I'll send it to you.

All the best,
Martyn

Hi Martyn
Thanks for the offer - I haven't come across WH Allsopp, although he could well be linked in a sideways fashion as my 5xgreat grandfather was an innkeeper in Wirksworth and did pass the trade down but not in my direct line. Will let you know if the Cat does turn up in my research.
Cheers Jan Wink

Dear Martyn,

I wonder if you would mind looking for any mentions of the surname PAYNE in your book, please?  I know there were PAYNEs living in Hazelwood in the 9th Century, and although they are not closely connected with my lot from Newton Solney & Church Gresley, I'm still holding out for the discovery of a distant link at some stage.  Many thanks for the offer.

Regards and best wishes,
