Help please!

I have a ready-created website using Family Historian.  There are over 300 files.  Can anyone recommend how I can upload a zipped folder to my free webspace otherwise it'll take me ages, at 5 files at a time.  Plus I want to be able to update the whole website easily.

Many thanks,

Julie

Hi Julie

I also use FH and played around with generating HTML files and know exactly what you mean.

There is a facility in FH to upload to your website directly using the FH FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Try doing it with that, giving the correct address for your website. You can't do it with that number of files using RC's FTP.

You don't need to do it one file at a time  Wink You can't unfortunately upload zipped files to the RootsChat website.

You can upload a whole bunch of files to the RootsChat webspace using a number of FTP programs, such as SmartFTP or FileZilla.

You enter your connection details and password and then select the files you want to upload.

Hi Gadget,

In FH it only gives advice about using your own internet provider for free web space or use an FTP client.
I've also registered for free web space with Wanadoo, and normally they are able to deal with zipped files, but apparently they're having technical problems at the moment.  There should be an option to upload zipped files, and it isn't there Sad

I'm trying to follow the tutorial for Smartsave, but it goes too fast, before I can write it down!

Hi Julie

What version of FH are you using? I have to go out for about half an hour but I'll check through mine again. I didn't have any problem with zipped files. When I checked mine for looks (publish to desk top) I  just clicked on the index file and away it went.  Can you do this? How can you view what you want to upload at the moment?

Once you've got the unzip problem solved, you can use any of the progs that Trystan mentioned or the ones recommended by FH.

PM me if you like.

Hi Julie

I've just done a test on one of my sample trees and put it through the FH wizard. I named it 'Test'.

When I go to the location that I specified, I have a folder called 'Test'. This contains the index file and a large number of other files. The folder was not zipped - just standard folder. The image below shows what it contains.

Hi Gadget,

I am using version 3.  I created my files, and then I copied  them into a zipped file, so I can access them either way Smiley   Yes I can view the web pages individually - the zipped file isn't a problem per se - just how to upload all of the files the easiest way  Huh

I've got Smartsave on the job now.   Wink I've just managed to get the Window to display the same as the tutorial!! - I needed to change to Auto layout and then put local folders on the left and remote folders on the right! So I've got my connection open, and I've found my website [normal not zipped] files and I've clicked on 'upload' and cross my fingers  Grin  The files have taken about 10 minutes to upload and I think its done! - I'll have a look at my website now - [pause] - wow! its there! Only problem is my little jpeg logo at the top of the page isn't there - just a red cross, and I did reduce the size as advised by FH.  I'll figure that one out.
Thank goodness for that - I was beginning to feel I was thick or something!   So do I just up-load again, when I want to update the details [which is regularly] will it over-write? or do I have to delete it all first?

Many many thanks for your help.  What a brill forum this is!

Cheers, Julie

Very pleased Julie. So the Zip was a red herring  Huh What is your website url? S I can be nosey  Grin Just noticed your 'globe' - it's looking good and you've got your logo up  Grin

You don't have to upload everything again - just the files you are changing.

Bob has got a very good tutorial on this board. it's worth reading all the queries that have gone before.

One thing to remember also: have copies of your ws files on hard disk and a copy on removable storage - better safe than sorry  Wink

Well done!  Many of us with rootschat webspace sites were novices and completely lost when we started, and now we dish out the advice (sometimes) - if it's scary we leave it to Berlin-Bob or Trystan!

Bob has got a very good tutorial on this board. it's worth reading all the queries that have gone before.

Good advice from Gadget.

Welcome to the RootsChat website club - good luck with your new venture.

Hello Gadget et al,

Many thanks for all your advice to get my website up and running.  I've had some very favourable comments already from some of my contacts.  Smiley  The Pilkington Family are only one branch of my full tree of course.   Wink The website address is http://pilkingtonfamily.rootschat.net

One more question please.  Huh  Apparently some people have not been able to open the website page and they get a message like "We can't find the page you asked for. It could be that the page has moved, or has been renamed to something slightly different. It could also be that the address that you typed in was just a letter or so out out. Perhaps double check the address you typed in."   even though they are clicking the link I've given them like everyone else.  Would it be to do with the security set-up on their PC - a firewall or something?

Cheers,

Julie

Hi Julie not sure - I expect Bob or Trystan or Falkyrn will know. I get in both ways fine  Smiley

I'm having great fun with FH 3. I'm splitting my tree into 7 (for each great grandparent), then generating separate HTML files from these. Then I'm importing these into my Net Objects Fusion generated site as great *4 grandchildren pages. I expect I'll get it finished by Christmas  Smiley

Hi Gadget

The problem is solved.   Wink  My contact got into my website using
http://pilkingtonfamily.rootschat.net/index.html  !!

In FH3 why are you splitting your files to create separate websites?  You can select who to use in your website by using a query in the Website wizard.  I created one called 'Descendants' to use for one particular branch.  The filters were 'add if a Descendant of X inc. spouses [max 5 generations] , add if an ancestor in the current result set inc.  spouses [max 1 generation] , and add if a descendant in the current result set inc. spouses [max 6 generations]

That meant I'd got X plus 5 generations of his descendants, and all their parents, plus 6 generations of descendants from everyone which includes all siblings and their spouses too. Grin

I think Family Historian is a brilliant program, and the support group is excellent too.  Do you follow the mailing group?   I have got 6,413 individuals on my database. God knows how I'd manage without it!!

For now,  Wink

I'm doing that Julie (that's how FH splits)  - and generating seperate HTML pages/folders/websites - and then linking them to each set of greats in NOF because the tree(s) are only a minor part of my ws - I want the stories and photos to predominate  Wink

Family Historian is the best tree program that I've come across and it's not that expensive.

Hi Gadget,

Sorry I thought you meant that you were spliting your FH file into 7 separate files  Roll Eyes

As you're familiar with FH, I'm pestering you again with another question  Wink  Can you tell me what's the biggest size of photo I can use in the FH website wizard to put into my website?  I want a fairly large photo on the welcome page.  Also how do you insert thumbnails as photos?  I've read the discussions, but can't find the answer I want.  It just talks about inserting photos after the site has been uploaded.   Huh  I want people to be able to click a photo to full size on screen.   Smiley

Some where on here there's advice about putting a counter on your website too, but I've lost it!!   Can I do that in the FH wizard - in the advanced window adding the html code?

Maybe I'm getting a little too ambitious and over confident???!
