a Nurse in Folkestone?
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 16:46 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know how I can find out about a relative who was a hospital nurse S.R.N. probably in Folkestone.

She was born Matilda Jane HARRIS  1888 but when she died in Royal Victoria Hospital in 1960 her death certificate shows her name as Hilda DARYMPLE HARRIES otherwise Matilda Jane Harris of 9 Ingles Road, Hospital Nurse S.R.N (retired) Spinster.

I always knew her as Hilda Harries in the 1950's so she must have been using Darymple Harries for many years. A late elderly relative had told me Aunty Hilda had changed her name but did not know why.

Believe she became a nurse just after WWI. Also I was told she had at sometime nursed Noel Coward as a private nurse but have been unable to find out more on that statement.

Possible had lived in Folkestsone since before WWII and may well have been a nurse for wounded soldiers.

Thanks
Jean

There is a Folkestone local family history group. They may well have local knowledge and records available that could help you. They have a website with contact information etc.

Hi Jean

There are some nursing records at the National Archives in Kew, London including the Register of Nurses (SRN 1921-1973) in DT10 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=121

Thank you both for the info.

Hadn't realised there was a Folkestone FH group  so will try them.

I had thought of the National Archives but hadn't actually got round to checking them out.

I do have a photo of Aunty and one of them shows a badge which I believe is the College of Nursing before it bacame Royal CN.

I've been more curious as to why she change Harris to Harries and added the name Darymple. I know she never married and the certificate confirms it. So I'm not sure what name she will have used in her career.

Oh well gives me something new to research.
