Carol,
Do you have Duncan's death certificate as it may have more details (including he mother maiden name) and will definitely tell you what year he migrated.
You may then find the immigration records give his mothers maiden name (depending on the type of immigrant he was and where and when he arrived). He may also have immigrated as a child with his parents in which case you may get lucky and get their parents names.
A quick search of the NSW BDM (assuming he died in NSW) shows a couple of possibilities (but you will have to order them)
One quite close and Sydney
5488/1909 MCPHERSON DUNCAN DUNCAN MARY GRANVILLE
others remote but possible
16805/1932 MCPHERSON DUNCAN DUNCAN MARY REDFERN (Sydney - and he would need to have lived to 90)
17716/1934 MCPHERSON DUNCAN 85 YRS DIST HOSP ALBURY ALBURY (Country NSW - and he would need to have lived to 92)
12849/1896 MCPHERSON DUNCAN UNKNOWN UNKNOWN BATHURST (Country NSW - couldn't see a death for Mary McPherson in Bathurst)
The other death records have different parents names.
The other approach you could take is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. They have the parish registers and statutory registers indexed. It is a pay site, but you can view some of the images to the records online also. These will probably be in the old parish registers but you may be able to find his christening or the marriage of his parents to help you on your way.
