Hi
I have just joined this site. Fascinating!
I've been working on my family history for about 15 years.
I lived in Maidenhead for all of my school years, first I attended Boyne Hill Infants school. Then the junior school, then on to the County Girls School, as it was known then, on Castle Hill.
I have a photo of it, also Queen Anne House opposite where we did some of our lessons. If anyone would like a copy just let me know. At the request of Bridget Hole, a very good friend of mine, I also sent them to the Maidenhead Heritage Society.
I remember my cousin marrying a Horwood from Garden Cottages.  I think he also lived there at one time, before moving to Boyne Valley Road. The name is Shaw.
I have many fond memories of my childhood. We were poor but my sister and I never went hungry, although I have no doubt that my mother and grandmother sometimes did.
I also have some rotten memories of the war, of being so scared my teeth chattered.
Enough, I am digressing.  Just wanted you to know what a wonderful site you have here.

     Digressing is easy here...
so welcome to the site and I hope you find lots more to add to your tree.

Kind regards, Lesanne  Cheesy

As another "old Girl" from Maidenhead Welcome to Roots Chat.

It's good to have another Maidonian on board!  What years were you at the CG's School?  I have just received copies of the school photo taken in 1953 and 1956 and can let you have copies.  I would be interested in copies of the school particularly Queen Ann House - a part of Maidenhead that should never have been destroyed!

You have to make three posts before you can send or receive Private Messages so just add a couple more messages to this thread and then you can PM me.  My pics are too big to post on the board,

Cheers,
Abiam

Hi all
have just had a very interesting read of your maidenhead memories.

I too am an old maidonian as was my father, who was born in denmark street.

I went to maidenhead convent, lived in cannon court rd, which is off switchback rd furze platt, just to clarify the point.

We'll be taking over soon! Cheesy
Some of my Dad's siblings were also born in Denmark Street, I'm sure you can add some more memories.
Lesanne, have emailed you regarding the BRO.
Cheers all,

Hi Lesanne
Thanks for the offer.

Nothing I need right now for the Denmark st. area.

Just having a prob. at the moment trying to find parents of an Elizabeth Day - my dads paternal gran.

Know she was b. 1863 Burghfield and married Walter Read 1884 at Wokingham, but haven't got the marr. cert.

She married again in 1900 (bit iffy that one!) Henry G. Lockyer, and they ended up living in Alwyn rd .  My mum can remember them.  If you get any chance with that one would be very grateful.

Just had a quick look at the dads birth cert, sorry they moved top Denmark st, actually born 14 Cordwallis St (1913).  Mum and dad married in St Lukes church in 1935.  Recognise a lot of the names that have been mentioned before.  The Misses Westlake (there were two sisters, neither married) re Elmslie school, lived a few doors from us at Furze Platt.

Can remember playing tennis in the road with my brother who did a beaut of a return shot, straight through their greenhouse window.  Needless to say we disappeared quick!!

best regards

Hi Lesanne

Thanks for your kind welcome. I think I may like this site very much.
You have brought back memories of the vegetable horse and cart. I recall people rushing out with a shovel to gather the horse manure for their gardens (nothing else being available in wartime).

Also the little boys hanging on the back for a ride.

Hi Abiam

Thanks for your welcome also.  I was at the County Girls School from 1946 to 1951 (I think - it's long ago). Neverthless I would like your pics of the school photos '53and '56 as my sister was still there. Of course I will e-mail my photos. I agree, Queen Anne House should never have been allowed to be pulled down.

I have been asked the names of teachers at the . All I can recall are the following:

Head Mistress: Miss Wingate for a very short time, then Miss Costello.
Miss Spooner, Miss White, Miss Tozer, Miss Richmond. I'm sure the others will come to mind eventually.

Now I have made three posts so I will try to e-mail this weekend.
