Salcombe Cemetery's?
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 13:44 BST (UK) »

Does anybody live in, or know Salcombe?
Iam looking for people who may be buried there by the name of Shubart, Lee or Row.
My g-grandfather David Henry James Shubart died 20th April 1941 and lived at
5 Irland street Salcombe.I know that Salcombe is a small place so hasn't got many cemetery's. Would appreciate any help.

Hi Jan
Lucky you to live there.
Thats very kind of you to offer to do that, people are so helpful on this site.
I live in Berkshire so if you were researching anybody here I would gladly return the offer. By the way I have a death certificate with Deepway Exminster on it do you know is it a place or a hospital? Thanks again Belle.  Grin

Just been on old-maps and noticed there was a Sanatorrum at Exminster so maybe the person Iam looking for was there. Thanks for that Belle. Cheesy

Hi Belle
I had an interesting morning yesterday in the cemeterys in Salcombe.  The first is down in Salcombe itself and all very old, the newer cemetery is just out of town at the top of Salcombe.  Unfortunatley I did not find any Shubarts or Rows but there was a plaque for a George Lees died 1983 and May Lees 1992.  Thats not to say Shubarts are not there as there are quite a few spaces in rows that look as if the headstones had been removed from.
I took some photos , the headstones all look out over the Salcombe Estuary and also of Island Street.  I'll try and attach them.  If it does not work I could always put them on a disk and send them to you.  You should get a picture of some cottages of which the third one along is no5 Island Street and one of the view from the cemetery

Hi Jan,
I can almost smell the sea air from your photo's they are brilliant and what a great day you chose to go,and what a place to end your days.
I was planing to visit Devon this year as I have a fair bit of research in Devon, after seeing the pictures I feel more inclined to come.

There could be a connection with the Lees you mentioned as my Mother's grandmother was a Lee and the Lees lived in Salcombe in the 1930s I will have to reseach the parish records to confirm weather they are connected.
By the way did you mean 5 ireland st, is on the left or the right of your picture.

I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate you doing this, thank you so much.
