Would anyone be able to locate for me Helen MARTIN. Born abt. 1851 in Urr.
I last have her on the 1881 census in Cross Street, Girthon. She is a Widow, her husband was James Martin.
She is living with her sisters: Mary BEATTIE and son, James Jane BEATTIE Jemima BEATTIE Mary Ellen BEATTIE, Niece William BEATTIE, Nephew
Any help would be appreciated. Annette

The nearest is :
Carlaverock, Dumfries, 24 DEc 1851 to Alexander Martin and Helen, nee Cobban.
There are no others around that time (+/- 3 years) in the region
There seems to be no sign of her on censuses after the one you mention. I have also checked for marriages and deaths - nothing as yet

I think that there is a slight mix up of surnames here Helen was Helen Beattie, she appears to have married James Martin in Girthon ion 13th September 1869.
Helen Beattie was 22, a domestic servant, living at Digby St, Girthon. Her parents were: James Beattie, clogmaker, (deceased) and Mary William, formerly Beattie, maiden surname Welsh.
and James Martin, ag. lab, 24, living at Gordon St, Anworth. His parents were: James Martin, ag lab and Mary martin, maiden surname Davidson.
I shall now see if I can find Helen Martin in the post 1881 censuses.
Added - nothing in Censuses, marriages or deaths after 1881.

Thanks - this confirms her parents, mentioned on the marriage cert. She was 82, cause of death senility. ususal residence: West Cottage, Carsluith. Maybe she was in Wigtownshire in the 1891-1901 censuses
Some of my ancestors (Carsons) came from Kirkmabreck

My 3xgrt was Jean Carson b. 1886, she married James Burgess in Kells in ? 1808 (off top of head). James stayed the night with someone in Kirkbride in 1833 on the way to Creetown - in a letter he refers to 'staying the night with our old friend in Kirkbride' .
I'd love to know who.

To Callywoods and Gadget,
I have just returned from a few days holiday in Northern NSW and will digest all your wonderful information in the next day or so. Just after a quick glance I can see lots of new clues. Yes, Callywoods, you have helped me with my Sinclairs in days gone by. Cannot wait to throughly read all the messages.
Many, many thanks to you both,
Annette
