Hi,

I think it is Butthowe.  Probably the name of a farm or small hamlet within the parish of Greystoke.  If you look a little further down on the census page there is a place called Bank Howe.  A "howe" was a small hill or hillock.

Hi Dwalin

try the following site:

www.old-maps.co.uk

It's free and you normally get an mid 19th century map of the area you were looking for.  It doesn't tend to recognise farm names etc in the search function but will certainly recognise Greystoke and you can then zoom around the area - maps of that time normally named local farms and smaller settlements so it may help you to track down exactly where they lived.  Unfortunately it is down for maintenance at the moment but should be back up soon.

One other place to try is Roly Grigg's Cumbrian Genealogy pages - get a bit overlooked now the 1851 is more widely available but they contain a useful place index of everywhere listed in the 1851 census.  It's at:

http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/

one word of warning though - I can't make my find function work on the PDFs (may just be me) so they have to be manually searched.

Kind Regards

Sue

Hi Geoff

yes - the Greystoke on the 1841 census (172/16) is the one near Penrith.

Hi All

take a look at the following page:

http://groups.msn.com/MatterdaleMatters/1841census.msnw

Lists her as being at Baldhowend in Matterdale.  Matterdale was part of the Greystoke census area in the 1841 census!

Lots of useful BMD info and census for the area on the site too.

In the Parson & White Directory of 1829

In Matterdale under the heading Yeomen -  Murray, Thos.  But-how end.

"But-how end" is the name of a farm in this instance.

By the way "Greystoke* is spelt "Greystock" in this book as it sometimes was in former times.

In the "Principal Inhabitants of Cumberland" of 1847  the farm is called  Baldhow again.

So I think you probably have to decide for yourself which is the correct name for the farm.
