Kenya??
« on: Friday 26 May 06 20:42 BST (UK) »

Hi all,
just found out from a cousin that our great uncle emigrated to Kenya
          from th UK.

I know Kenya is in Africa--but thats the sum total of my knowledge!
(at least I hope it is)

Was there a certain part that brits settled.

         What work was there.

Can anyone give me any pointers of where to search.

Not sure when g,uncle emigrated,he was born in 1895,so it
might have been around the 1920's.

        Thanks all
        MM

Hello MM,

It looks as though your great uncle was in Kenya during an interesting time in the history of that country. The British East Africa Protectorate became the Kenya Colony on 23rd  July 1920 and was administered by a British Governor. There are some good details about the History of Kenya on the historyworld.net website.

It's hard to say where he may have been living or working. He possibly lived in one of the major towns ... Mombasa, Nairobi or even Nanyuki (a market town in Central Kenya which was founded by British settlers in 1907). It may be more difficult to establish where he worked as there was a reasonably wide choice of jobs ... the Colonial Officers, the Kenya Police, and the Railway as well as many large farms.

Hopefully you can find him leaving the UK.

Thank you both.

I have rather neglected my family tree since this post, but your reply's have jogged my interest again.

My g,uncle Alex has always been an enigma to us and it would be fantastic to find out something about him.

Thanks again.
