William ENGLISH b.c1740 St Mary's Cheshunt
« on: Saturday 30 December 06 17:38 GMT (UK) »

Please could somebody check the registers for St Mary's Cheshunt and see if they can find baptism or marriage details for William English. His parents were James English,a farmer, and Sarah Hoppy. James married Sarah 6 Feb 1733 in Netteswell Essex and had the following children.
James baptised 29 Sept  1734; Thomas baptised 11 Apr 1736 St Mary's  Cheshunt; Sarah; William; and George baptised 29 Sept 1734 St Mary's Cheshunt. According to the marriage registers for Netteswell, both Sarah Hoppy and James English were from Cheshunt.
Many thanks

Hi Philippa,

The baptisms of James and Thomas are confirmed.  However, James was the only member of the family baptised on 29th September 1734 according to the St.Mary's parish records.  There is no trace of a marriage for William in the Allen Index for Hertfordshire.

Hi Peter,
Thank you so much for checking this out for me. What a pity there is no baptism or marriage for William. My problem is that I am a direct descendant of William English born c1740. (He was said to be age 80 when buried on 19 Apr 1820 at All Saints Edmonton.) He is married to Mary Terrell (his second wife - I have no name for the first ) on 2 Dec 1774 in Edmonton. The problem is that there are no other English's in Edmonton before this time so his parents must have moved. I found James who married Sarah Hoppy and in his will he had a child William whom I cannot find anything about except that as he was in the will he must have been alive in 1758, so I am hoping that my William is this James English's son William, particularly as the rest of James's children are born around the right dates. I was hoping that there would be some evidence of a move from Cheshunt to Edmonton as they are just a stone's throw away from each other or evidence of a marriage to prove or disprove the link and perhaps demolish another brickwall.
Best wishes
Philippa
