My 3 x grt grandfather was married in Brampton 1812,at the time of his marriage he was said to be a Soldier,at the Baptisms of his 3 sons he was said to be a CORDWAINER.I am stuck with this man,cannot find ANYTHING about him in the soldiers records,& nothing to show that he was from Cumberland.On the 1841 census he is living in York,still a Cordwainer,& says YES as to being from Yorkshire!!He dies BEFORE the 1851 census so unable to learn the TRUE place of his birth.I have had a search done of the Apprentice records in York but he is NOT listed,(his 3 sons are)I am wondering,would he have become a Cordwainer BEFORE becoming a Soldier OR could he perhaps have learned the trade whilst being a soldier,does anyone know If there are Apprentice Records available in the Cumberland area that can be searched,I live in Scotland & I would be very grateful for any help.Thankyou. You don't happen to have a Richard Harrison b1797 in Elslack, do you? I believe that is near Skipton but not sure how far that is from Thirsk.
