...totally grasping at straws on this one.
Here goes, if anyone researching the STEWART surname in Enniskillen area ever comes across reference to a George Stewart, born probably late1870's/80's,, and know from any subsequent history on them that they moved to Scotland, please do post what you have.
My own searches would suggest there were probably families in Enniskillen around that time with the surname Stewart, but as I have so little info it is difficult to pursue these further.
My own dad used to always say that his maternal grandad, George, came from Enniskillen, but that he had no other details (ie dates, place name etc). George probably moved to Scotland late 1800's to work in the mines, and possibly lived in Cadzow Bridge area of Hamilton. He had a number of children born there, one of them being Agnes, my dad's mum.
So, longshot I know, but worth posting anyway as someone, somewhere may one day have the missing link.
Thanks in advance, ever in hope.

Update:
I have now found a Stewart family living in Cadzow, Hamilton, Lanarkshire at 1901 Census who may be the line I am searching.
Details are:
James Stewart aged 67 (so born c1834) Eliza Stewart aged 58 (so born c1843) George Stewart aged 18 (so born c 1883) William Stewart aged 14
all recorded as 'born Ireland'.
Has anyone ever come across anything on such a family group, especially in the Enniskillen area (I am assuming there may have been other, older siblings, either that or James and Eliza had the two boys in their forties)?
Thanks for looking and ever hopeful someone may turn up a link.

Got George's marriage register entry so now know above family was right one. Further info, in hope that someday it will link in with someone else researching:
Mother's maiden name = Armstrong (her father being John)
Possible older siblings:
John Stewart b 11/7/1866 Newtownbutler, Fermanagh Thomas Stewart b 30/6/1875 Ireland Sarah Jane Stewart b 04/2/1872 Ireland
Still ever hopeful.

Thanks Christopher, I had looked at Griffiths ages ago before I discovered that my great grandfather's dad was named 'James'. Must re-visit same and dig a bit deeper.
Have now confirmed the 'possible older siblings' to be correct and know that one of them, Sarah Jane, married a William Rutledge at Drumully, Monaghan in 1894 before they too moved to Scotland.
It would seem that the Stewart family lived in the border area and at times were in Monaghan and others in Fermanagh.
Further 'finds' at any time are always welcome.

Hello Scotmum,
I am interested that you mention the name Rutledge. The 1862 Valuations show a lot of them in Enniskillen.

Unfortunately all three surnames ie Stewart/Armstrong/Rutledge seem to be very popular in the townlands around the Fermanagh/Monaghan border. Mind you, it has been a bonus that they moved to Scotland as birth certificates of the Rutledge children and death certificate of James Stewart have helped add some more info to this group than I would probably have found otherwise. Next step is to try and get the birth register entry for George and have an educated guess at James and Eliza's marriage year (possibly 1865) in hope of an index entry for this too - if I get these and then the certificate details, hopefully the townlands or even an address will narrow my search down further. Thanks for your interest.

Thanks, willow. I hope to go down that line soon...saving the pennies again after spending quite a few ( ) on some of my other lines. That's the thing with family history....it can turn into a very expensive hobby.

Going through older posts and came across this one. By now you might have been able to find more information but if you haven't done so the following might be of interest.
Joseph Stewart born 14 June 1869 Co. Monaghan. Parents- James Stewart & Eliza Jane Armstrong.

My great aunt (by marriage??) was Jane Stewart, from Makerry, Fermanagh/Tyrone border. I cannot find a marriage cert for her and Timothy Kearns from Sleaty, Queens County, (now Laois) in Ireland, but they lived there for some time. They had two children registed in Graiguecullen parish church, James born October 1894 and Timothy who was born December 1895. They are in the 1901 census at 1 Cartburn St. East Greenock, Renfrewshire along with another son John born in 1899 in Co Fermanagh. Timothy Junior changes his name to James Cairns and he married Annie Livingstone on 26/9/1915 in St John Church, Portugal Street, Glasgow. Her parents are listed as Alexander and Mary (nee McNally) Livingstone. Witnesses were Edward Murdoch and Maggie Hughes. They both gave their address as 50 Commerce Street. Glasgow. James death cert is registered 8/6/1955 at Royal Infirmary, Portland Street Glasgow. The death was registered by his son T. Cairns and the given address was 580 Old Shettleston Road, Glasgow. If any of this fits in with your family line, it would be great. Why would they have changed the spelling to Cairns, although I know the Scottish pronunciation of Kearns and Cairns is similar? What about his brother John, did he also change his name? I am researching from Ireland so accessing information is not always easy. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
