Hi EBN,
I've no idea about Robert & Susannah.
Only got 2 Roberts one 1880 Llanllyfni  other 1881 Holmer. No info as to wives & children.

I've only got access to 1901.

The trouble with the family is that so many have been given the same names especially those born around the same time.

EBN,
James was son-in-law of Joseph & Elizabeth having married their eldest daughter (his cousin) Mary Elizabeth.  That is probably why he was living with them in 1891.

  Hi Chris...

Been diiging around. I posted a request for the image in 1881 census of Martyne and had two replies. Not 100% on Martyne so theory.....

   1881 = has Martyne age 2 so b 1879
   1891 = has Robert M age 10 so b 1881
   1901= has Robert age 23 so b 1879

Checked births for all Socketts Hereford
            1878......no births
             1879.....Robert Manthorpe Q1 6A 528
             1880....Enock    Q3 6A 501
             1881.....NO BIRTHS
             1882.... Ernest q4 6a 487.
It is possible that Robert and Martyne/ Manthorpe could be same person.

Will now check deaths for same.

   Hi Chris...

Have just checked from Jan 1881 to Dec 1891 for any Sockett deaths that would match... Only found Enoch ( now spelt diff).

There are now deaths listed for a Martyne  or even any other Sockett in Hereford.

Tazzie,

It seems that I will have to go to Hereford and get certs. for Martyne and Robert.  I am sure they are not the same person and the only way I'll know is when I've got both certs. in my hand. At the same time I can check on the deaths of my grandparents - Joseph C & Hannah all I know is that they died within months of each other but what year I don't know.
Many thanks for your help

Chris - you do not need to go to Hereford, you can write to the Register Office and order the certificates of Robert and Martyne and also ask what other Sockett registrations they hold.
It is an unusual name and should be available on an Index.

I have looked for this family using a local Church or Chapel for baptisms etc but no luck - have you any idea if they were C of E or Non Conformist ?

IGI is no help.  Any mention of a church for a marriage ?

Tazzie, EBN,

I have been in touch with registrar this morning.
there is no birth registered for Martyne.
Robert Manthorpe born 18/01/1879 cert on the way.
So 1881 must be mistake.  I'll have to get a copy and have a good look.

The deaths of Joseph C and Hannah are spot on.  Hannah returned from Josephs funeral and went to bed to await death.  My mother told me that Hannah couldn't live without him.
Thanks a lot both for your hard work.

   Hi Chris....

Had 2 other rootschatters look at census and neither thought it said Martyne so looks posssible. Names given at census time are not always the given name ,sometimes pet name or middle name so this can confuse things all round.
Good luck with the certificate, let me know what happens....

                     Happy hunting

Hi Tazzie,
Cert. arrived today for Robert Manthorpe Sockett born 18/01/1897.  It was a bit of a shock to find that my GGrandmother could not write and had to put her mark.
It now looks as there was no Martyne.

The strange thing is that when doing a general search of 1901 for the family(on Genes) this result came up twice:
Martine Sockett 1878 High Wycombe   St. Pancras  Euston.

When I put these details, in the search came back "sorry can't be found.
Strange.

Regards
Chris

Hi Chris.... a result then.. Smiley

I really do not know how he came to be Martyne in the 1881 census thats what he is under on both LDS and Ancestry.

Checked 22 yearold Sockett's and could see Robert in Holmer but no Martine. That was on main site not GR .

As for her mark this was on an earlier thread somewhere but others said that sometimes "x" on a birth cert could just mean she was holding the baby as she had signed her full name at marriage but I dont suppose that would cover everyone.

Anyway on the whole all of this leads to a nice big extension to your tree . So  good luck and enjoy the rest of the hunting.

                   Best wishes

Pleased you have got this sorted now.

I wondered if they called Robert Manthorpe, Marty or Manty or somehing like that when he was small, and it got on the Census that way. Well we shall never know now, but you now some leads to go even furtehr back now I presume.

Good luck.

Hi Tazzie, EBN,
I think I've laid the Martyne mystery to rest - but who knows.

I've got Robert his wife & son on 1901 and I've traced my family back to 1744 in Shropshire.

I've still got plenty of names that need adding to the tree so the research goes on.

Many thanks to you both for all the help.

Hi Chris,  You may or may not know there are still a great number of Socketts still living in Hereford,  if you consult the 'phone book you will see.  I know several personally.
Good searching
