Location of Paddingfold, Ewhurst?
« on: Wednesday 31 May 06 14:11 BST (UK) »

Can anyone please tell me where a place called 'Paddingfold' is, or was, in Ewhurst?

This is the address given for my g-g-grandfather, James PANNELL, and his family on the 1871 census (the surname was mispelled on the census return as Panell).  James was a hawker and the family were travellers - I'm trying to ascertain whether they were actually living in a house, or perhaps Paddingfold was a field?

The Pannells are the only family listed on the page living in Paddingfold, and the next address on the page is COXGREEN.

Any help would be much appreciated!  Smiley

Hi Clara

Jane Masri has kindly given us a link to a Surrey Map 1786, its almost at the top of this forum. Padingfold and Padingfold Farm are listed under 'P'. It's right on the Sussex border near to Rudgwick and is 'quite' close to Ewhurst. Coxs Green is there too.

Dawn, you're a star!  Smiley

I actually did have a look at Jane's map before I posted, but I obviously wasn't thorough enough..... Undecided

Thanks so much!

Clara

ps Interestingly, just looked to see where this was on a modern map and found that 'Paddingfold' on the census return (and it definitely says that) and on the old map, is actually now called Pollingfold...... no doubt why I couldn't find it before!
