I am trying without success to find any birth record of Annie McKechnie.
When she married my great grandfather in 1884 Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, she was 23. On the entry for parents, there is a space where the father should be and an entry for Janet Ferguson mother (deceased).
In a later census return she has put down Islay as where she was born. I have searched the Scotlandspeople birth database for surrounding years and there is nothing. (including McEachern and Ferguson as a surname).
My father also spoke of his grandmother coming from the islands and possibly something to do with fishing, but I never asked him to be more precise.
Can anybody help? Thanks.

Hi Pari Passu
Following through with Joe's prompt on your post
Not sure if you have this yet, given it's nearly six months since you first posted. This is the only entry I can find that fits, not sure if you have viewed this previously on SP:
ANN MCEACHERN Birth: 30 MAR 1858 Kilchoman, Argyll, Scotland Parents: Father: ARCHIBALD MCEACHERN Mother: JANET FERGUSON
Her birth cert. would show whether she was illegitimate.
The are two very good sites for Islay:

The birth details I posted are the only one that seem to come close to your Ann, with mother Janet Ferguson.
Regards.

Can't be the right entry Just found Archibald and Janet in the 1861 Census living in Port Charlotte, Islay, with a number of other children born pre-1855. This Ann looks to be their last born given their ages.
From the 1881 Census, there are only two Ann* M*ckech* aged 17-26 with an Islay birth place. The first is age 21 and looks to be probably the daughter of Archibald and Janet, she gives her birth place as Port Charlotte, Islay which fits with the 1861 Census entry.
The other is aged 26, a domestic servant, unmarried and working in a household in Maryhill, Lanark. Was Ann consistent with her age through the censuses, I am wondering if this could be her in 1881. It may also explain, if her birth year was actually 1854, why you have been unable to find her birth entry on SP and her birth may not have been registered.
Regards.
Monica

Thank you both for your input. It was the change of name from McEachern to Mckechnie that fooled me. I have managed to find the family now. It was strange however to find Annie's father left off her marriage certificate, when he was still alive and living on Islay, and her mother was not dead either! It just goes to show you can't even rely on the certificates to give a full picture, although was the omission deliberate, I wonder.
