Confirmation of Parentage - Pyper/Piper
« on: Thursday 01 June 06 13:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi Folks,

I would like to find some type of confirmation that my great great grandfather's parents were George Piper and Helen Burness (married 1 May 1791 Marykirk Kinc)

What I have is this:

Robert Pyper (or Piper) born 1801 Arbroath (Census 1851).
He married Elizabeth WATT 22 May 1826 Fettercairn.
(Elizabeth was born Montrose accord. to census)

IGI : Robert Pyper Bp 26 April 1801 Arbirlot, s/of George Piper/Helen Burness.
I was given a date of death of Robert as 15 Feb 1876 (place unknown).
Census place in 1851 was Parish of Muirside of Esslie, Fettercairn, where Robert had a farm of 12 acres.

Would the death cert for Robert confirm his parentage?

I was going to "assume" that I had the correct parents and skip back to George and Helen but thought better of it. Roll Eyes

Would appreciate any possible assistance in confirming this line - please.

Many thanks
Di

Hi Lady Di,

    Yes, Scottish Death Certificates give:-

     1.  Name, sex and address of the deceased,
          and marital status.
      2.  When and where died.
      3.  Age and occupation.
      4.  Names of parents, with father's occupation
and mother's maiden surname (and any
           subsequent surnames), and whether alive
           or dead.
       5.  Cause of death, and name of doctor who
            certified death.
       6.  Name and relationship and residence of
            informant.
       7.  When and where registered, and
            signature of registrar.

Lady Di,

Since my last answer to your query I have searched the Scotlands People index, but the only record of the death  of a Robert Pyper in 1876 is one in Tarbolton, Ayr.
The Parish of Dun in Angus has one in 1870, and the Parish of Barry, Angus has one in 1873.
Where did you find Robert's date of death ?

Hi Isles,

Thanks for looking through the records.

Robert's date of death was supplied by another descendant who had recorded some of the family details. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of that date.

On his daughter's marriage cert of 30.07.1876 he is recorded as "deceased" so I felt that the date of death of Feb '76 is possibly not too far wrong.

Only other item was that he may have died at "Muirside" - again, this is possibly wrong. Of course this may have been based on the census place he lived at when he was alive  Huh

Sorry - not a lot of help really  Sad

Hallo again Di,

I've had another look at the index of deaths and feel that the Robert Pyper who died at Barry, Angus in 1873 may well be your man.  Unlike the others I mentioned, this entry corresponds to a birth date of 1801 plus or minus 1 year.
Perhaps he and his wife ended their days there or if he was a widower, living with a son or daughter.

Thanks Isles,

I know that the 1873 death entry in Barry sounds right but I have never known the family to leave Fettercairn - and that doesn't mean a whole lot, I know.  Roll Eyes

I have the 1841 - 1861 census info but not 1871 or 1881. Would you recommend looking at these to see if Robert and Elizabeth actually moved to Barry (or somewhere else)?

Is SP the only place to view Scotland census? I have Ancestry but can't see Scotland on it.

Really appreciate your help - thank you

Di

PS - I noticed that you also have Burness. Is your family on the Burness Family tree done by John? and have you found any errors in it?

Di

If you think that the one Isles has found is correct, I'll download the full image and can then get all the details. I've got a few units left on SP.

It was kind of you Gadget to help out.  I had intended to take out credits with SP as I have a few BMD's of my own to check, but for some reason it would not accept my bank card (don't have a credit card).  Last time I simply clicked on a credit card logo at random and it went through O.K.  Strange !  I think I'll have to e-mail SP.
I have a dental appointment at Montrose on Monday, and the Library there holds all the Angus Census.  I'll have a look at Barry  to see if Robert Pyper et al are there in 1871.  If not, I can check the 1871 Fettercairn Census at Stonehaven Library.
Yes, I'm on John Burness's website (www.buness.ca).  A wonderful site indeed, and everything agrees back to my 3-greats grandparents John Burness & Isobel Barclay who married in Benholm Parish, 1768

Thanks Isles,

Your offer of a census lookup is greatfully accepted. I'm sorry you have to go via the dentist though  Sad - never the nicest of experiences!

I have been so impressed with John's website - He has obviously been working on it for years and years. If my George Pyper and Helen Burns/Burness work out - my lot will be there as well - certainly saves me a lot of work  Grin (but as usual, I still feel the need to confirm my branches)

Thanks,
Di
