Hi again Theresa
From what you've said I would imagine http://www.parishregister.com/aboutstp.html would answer most of your basic questions about that occupation and has lots of information and directs you to sources of further information.
If they were in business you could also check www.historicaldirectories.org
Do you have the death certificates? There may be inquests and newspaper reports in The Times - have you checked these? Are you interested in these? If so, perhaps someone can help you on this point.
I've never heard of Catlone House, perhaps someone else has? Can I ask where you obtain this information? My first thought was that it might be a transcription error for Custom House? It depends on your source, but let us know.
I'm not sure if this is all of your queries answered or if you are looking for something more specific ... ?

Hello
It appears on the 1871 census that the family is living at Wapping Wall, William (elder) is noted as a Dock Labourer although the image is feint I'm afraid.
In 1881 William (son) is living on High Street, Shadwell (not far from Wapping Wall) and he's noted as a Barge Builder.
I guess you already have this information though.
This still does not shed any light on Catlone House though - if you have a scanner could you show us the part of the death certificate with the Cathlone House part on it?
Not sure how good your London geography is but you can find both of these street on this 1862 map http://www.motco.com/Map/81006/

Hi Theresa
Thanks for sending me the image of the death certificate. It is not easy to read but I'm pretty much certain it is Custom House (not as you thought). The death is registered in All Hallows Barking which pretty much confirms that Custom House is correct. This is a modern day map, put Custom House into the search box www.multimap.co.uk and is shows the location. That will help you find Custom House on the 1862 map should you wish to. Custom House is due east about 2 miles along the River Thames from Shadwell and Rotherhite (with sit on opposite banks of the Thames). If you google Custom House there's quite a lot of background information on it during the period you're interested in.
I noticed it said he was a Watchman to a Lighterman.
I'm afraid I couldn't find any mention of either of them in The Times.

Theresa
I'm not too familiar with inquests, but I'm sure someone else will point you in the right direction.
The links above that I mentioned provide info on apprenticeships and bargefolk ancestry and the like especially this one http://www.parishregister.com/aboutstp.html which tells you where the information can be found. I think most of it is at the Guildhall Library in London ...
Wapping Wall runs along the Thames it still exists today - this link on a modern map will guide you to the place on the 1862 map http://www.rootschat.com/links/0io/
Good luck with that Biker
