Hi

Are you sure that it is Corris, Merionethshire? The only Corris that I know of is Corris, near Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire. I shall have a look for your H Ll JOnes there butif he's just down as H Jones it's definitely needles and haystacks. Do you have anything else at all - like job, rough age, wife/parent/brother?

You won't believe this - I've found him living at Corris Terrace, Talyllyn, Merionethshire. Aged 31, school master B.S (? B.Sc?) B. Merionethshire, Ffestiniog.

Ref is: RG10/5688/82/12 - Ffestiniog, Merionethshire

Problem is that he's down as H Ll Jones and I can't find him on the 1851.

Hi Gadget,

Can I be a pain in the butt and ask you if you can give me his full names, and whether he was living with his family - and who they were.

The one I have was a lodger with

May Williams, unm, china shopkeeper, b. Talyllyn

There was no one else with her and, as I said, there were just his initials: H. Ll. Jones.

Hi Gadget,

More than grateful. The last answer puts all the pieces together. He was probably the schoolmaster at the British School (BS) in Corris, but lodging at Tallylin, and was there when the census was taken on the Sunday night.

Can't thank you enough.

Regards

I can only find one person who fits the bill on the 1841:

HO107/1427/3 Folio 43, page 6
3, PenyBryn, Ffestiniog
Benjamin Jones, 25-29, Quarryman, nbc (not born county)
Margaret Jones, 25-29, nbc
Hugh (L or I) Jones, 1, bc

This may not be him but it's the best I can come up with.

HI Quarryman

Before getting too carried away:

I've found your H Ll Jones on the 1881 (RG11/5544/83/22)

Still lodging with the (tea and )china shopkeeper. Still a school teacher, aged 40, b. Merionethshire, Talyllyn

BUT

his name is Humphrey Lloyd Jones

The Hugh Jones was married and still a quarryman  Huh

I'll give you another 1/2 hr and then I must get on with my own stuff Wink

It would appear that he is in one of the missing Eds in 1861  Huh Also, there are a few possibilities on the 1851. I didn't realise that there were so many Humphrey Jones in Wales (thought they were all like min - Robert or John  Tongue ). I've also checked the BMDs but again too many Humphreys and no Humphrey Lloyd.

Sorry

Hi

I've been trying to follow the story but find it difficult.
If you want a fresh pair of eyes (well fairly fresh) please let me know but please clarify what you are looking for.

I have ancestors in Corris as well but on this occasion they were Owens.

best wishes

Hi Peter

As far as I can tell, Quarryman is interested in the H Ll Jones , b.c. 1940 who was a school master, lodging with May Jones at Talyllyn, b. Mer, Ffestiniog on the 1871.

I thought I'd found a possible, named Hugh I or L,  from 1841 -1861 to discover his parents. However, when I checked some more, I find that said H Ll, was still lodging in 1881 and his name was Humphrey Lloyd Jones.

There are three possibles on the 1851 in the area. One son of a widowed pauper, one the grandson of a farmer and one the son of a quarryman. All are scholars. None, are listed as Humphrey Lloyd or even Humphrey L. They are all just Humphrey Jones. It might be worth looking at the 1841 but I've just got to get other things done now.

Given our 'superior' education system, I would have thought that all three are likely candidates.

It might be worth looking at the Clwyd FHS records for births recorded around 1840 in that area. i don't have them.
