The details given by genechaser should get you a death cert from GRO; they seem to be taken from the register and that is how I have got my certs.

You do not need the day just the quarter (Oct/Dec), year (1911), place Ipswich (4a) and page (1010) plus names of parents as a checking point.

Try again and let us know how you get on, good luck

Hi Theresa

Which web site are you trying to get the certificate from? If you're getting it from the local register office, you need the exact date, but if you're getting it from the GRO you just need the information genechaser gave you.

Are you using the site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp ?

Hi Theresa

I've had a go myself to see what the problem is. I think it might be on the first page - when you select what sort of certificate you want, you click on 'Death Certificate (England & Wales)'. I think the problem is that you also need to click on 'Is the General Register Office Index known?' on the 'Yes' button. That moves you to the screen where you type in the reference rather than the date!

Have a go at that and let us know what happens  Grin

Good luck

Glad it finally worked for you, Theresa  Grin

Now you have to be very very patient while the GRO works through its backlog and finally gets to your certificate!

Hope it's worth while when it arrives! Do say if we can help with anything else.....

Best wishes
