Romany's lost Cornwall
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 13:48 BST (UK) »

This is my first post, not sure if I'm doing it right.
have been researching Romany Smith's in Cornwall, can not find  my  GGmotherx 3,  married to James Smith who died before 1875, his children are

Selina        married       (Henry James) 1866
William          ""             (Caroline Smitheram) 1875
Harriet          ""              (Robert Lee)               1874
Betsey          ""              (Nelson Buckland)      1875
Peggy           " "             (Joseph Orchard)
Britannia         "" no information only in 1871 census cornwall

Know nothing about James or his wife, just wondering if anyone knows anything about this line, as I'm at a dead end , so to speak, any help would be appreciated.

Do you have dates/places of birth for any of these people?  That would make it easier to look for them on censuses, etc!

Smiley To CatOne and Rambler, many thanks for your input into my query, I have all that information, and obtained all marriage certificates in the hope of some clues, but their ages differ in the census, as with where they were born, Selina, William. are in the 1901 census, Peggy & Joseph Orchard no record of them after the 1881 census, Betsey & Nelson Buckland 1901 census, then they went to America, Brittannia no record after 1871 census, and Harriet my gggrandmother died 1889, so it seems James Smith and his wife are going to be extremly difficult to track down, but many many thanks for you help,

Freebmd has the death of (a) Britannia Smith age 26 registered 3Q 1882 Redruth vol 5c 130. No corresponding birth but there is a baptism on the IGI of Britannia Smith daughter of James and Betsy Smith on 3/7/1859 in Claygate, Surrey, batch C132741. Coincidence? Too far out of their normal route?  Might be worth checking out, do you think?

:)Thanks Osprey, I will certainly look into the information you provided, and will order the death certificate to see if there are any clues, also surrey seems a bit out of the way, but? you never know, its worth a check,  also I have been looking at siblings children's names, and there seems to be a pattern (know there's a word for it) with the naming of their children, so there may be clue in that, not quite ready to admit defeat yet, but many thanks for your help, maybe one day I can return the favour to someone on rootschat,

Hi Catherine, First off thankyou for all your help with my missing links, the Smiths in Devon sound promising, I've had a hunch there may have been another son called James, so there may have been more, so its a start, and the Britannia in Herts, well I'll be checking that out as well, I've just gone through the marriage certificates of the known siblings and found they each witnessed each others marriage, & one witness was a Defiance Orchard, so I got a bit sidetracked and checked this person out,  ( as in last post stated Joseph & Peggy after 1881 seemed to disappear) so to my surprise I found them in the 1901 census, with a little Defiance of their own,  so once again Catherine many thanks for your time and trouble locating these Smiths, I'm very grateful. Regards Colleen.

I'm sure I saw the names Defiance and Orchard on a posting by another rootschatter! Probaby searching the same families as you, maybe you could help each other out. I think if you type her name into the "Search Rootschat" logo at the top of the page, you'll get all the postings with her name in them. (deb usa is her user name I believe)

Good luck

Hi everyone Smiley
Colleena ...I have been searching my Penfold/Orchard family for a while now. I have a Defiance Penfold in my family , sister to my gr grandfather William Penfold. There are also a few Defiance Orchards in the family too.
My gg grandparents were Thomas Penfold who married Sophia Orchard in 1866 in Devon... they had my William and Defiance plus lots of other children. The Penfold and Orchard families intermarried and travelled together a lot !
They are also very confusing to search as their names seem to all be the same LOl eg:Defiance, Sophia, Harriet, Christopher, Christianna, selina, Thomas, william Edward/Edwin OMG i could carry on forever LOL

By the way ...did Defiance actually sign the married cert as a witness...if so i would love to see it

regards
Deb

Hi Deb, Colleen here as I've stated am related to the Orchards and Penfolds through the Smiths and Boswells, have got marriage certificate in front of me,for Selina Smith (gggrand aunt) and Henry James, dated 29th October 1866 residence at time of marriage Millbay Road Plymouth, witness William Smith (Selina's brother) and Defiance Orchard no signatures but mark off, will gladly scan a copy to you, if you like, my other defiance was born1893c Plymouth daughter of Joseph & Peggy (sometimes Maggie) Orchard, the orchards are like the Penfolds there are so many of them, and the names repeated in the same generations, my Boswell connection there is Maria Boswell who married a Christopher Boswell (widower) around 1910, but I haven't started that line yet, as it can be overwhelming, nice to hear from you Regards Colleen

hi Colleen
Just read you message .....regarding Christopher and Maria  boswell ....
This is the story as i know it :
Christopher Penfold's parents were Thomas and Sophia Penfold (nee Orchard)...they had lots of kids ... ie:
My William (who married a house dweller Bessie Palmer)
Defiance
Christopher
Plus others

Christopher Penfold married Carnation Richards.. they had one son , Unfortunately she died of TB at aged 24 in 1906. Christopher PENFOLD then remarried Maria Boswell. I am not sure of their kids as i have been concentrating on my William s/o Thomas and Sophia.

How are you related to the Penfolds...through Christopher Penfold and Maria Boswell ? (did she have kids before they were married or just from Christopher?). It certainly gets confusing ...what an enormous family! The same names are driving me NUTS LOL
