Gas Light & Coke Company London 1915
« on: Tuesday 06 June 06 18:54 BST (UK) »

Hello

I recently picked this old book up at a secondhand bookshop, and thought I'd post some info here in case it will be of help to someones research.  Called Co-Partners' Magazaine, Vol V 1915 it is an annual of the Gas Light & Coke Company.  This company was London based with works, offices and showrooms all over London, the main works being at Beckton East London.

This edition of the magazine, while providing info on the company, is basically a war record of its employees for the year.  At 350 pages it has tons of military photos (portraits, at the front, platoon groups, barracks, training, work etc), "Letters from the Front", Injury Reports, War reports of all kinds, a Roll of Honour with photos and profiles, photos of the Company's Men with the Colours etc etc.

I hope it might be useful to someone and although the index isn't the best I'd be search out information if you'd like.  I've included a few images to give you an idea of what it contains.

Regards
Biker

Hi Annie

As you know I'm a bit of a book fiend and have just started doing a lot more reading on WWI, not a bad bargain for £1 !!  I've browsed this so far and it's fascinating stuff - thought I'd post it here as there probably aren't many of these in circulation.  I also like to put a little bit back into the Armed Forces board since I get so much help!

The short answer is by Surname ...

It does have an index by Surname which is quite brief considering the numbers of soldiers mentioned in the book.  There is also a monthly Supplementary List of those Serving which lists Name: Occupation: Rank: Regiment or Ship.  There is also a Roll of Honour (Killed in Action or Died of Wounds) which is complete I think for 1915 and alphabetical by Surname.

It seems well anotated with all the photos having Name, Rank, Regiment.

Cheers  Smiley

Hi Biker,
I have just seen this post, and was wondering if by any small chance the book contains anything on my Great Grandfather  Frederick John Maisey. I know that he was born on 21 Jul 1897 in Camberwell, Surrey and from family stories & from his marriage certificate (1926) and his daughters (1947) that he worked in a Gas works and moved over london for his job. I know that his family ended up in Barking, and he worked in beckton.

Thanks

Hi Richard

Sorry for the late reply but have been glued to the TV watching the World Cup and also have a lot of work on at the moment so sadly little time for family history  Sad

However, I'll have a good look through the book and let you know what I come up with (if anything).

Hello,

Is there any mention in the book to anyone with the surname "Heming", one of my Heming ancestors is supposed to have lit the first London gas street light, I think around 1807, I'm not sure of his first name but his son is supposed to be my Great Great Great grandfather Henry Heming.

Thanks, Biker, for your reminder on another thread of this one.

I know my grandfather, Edmund George Dixon worked for the company, but I'm not sure when. He was in WWI.

Any mention, perchance?

Hi meles

I'm just off to have supper but will wade through it later - its a thick book and annoyingly not indexed  Wink
Just thought I'd mention quickly there is a G H Dixon of Pioneer Corp The Rangers with a photo that I noticed.  Any relation?

Will have a better look for your man later though.

Cheers

Hi meles

I've attached a rough scan of the only Dixon who appears in this edition.
Can do a proper scan if required.

I'd like to think so, but probably not related...

Thanks for looking this up for me. Very much appreciated.

Message for Biker re: Gas Light & Coke Co....

Just read about the book you brought about the above..

I am a volunteer for War Memorial Trust, and have been following up their War Memorial  which is sited at the old gasworks now sold off to PROLOGIS.  The War Memorial had last year had all the bronze name plaques stolen! I reported this to WMT and after much correspondence with the owners they now have replaced the name plaques albeit on plastic sheets BUT at least they are back on the Memorial.

I'm also doing some research on the names for an article, and your book sounds 'just what I'm looking for'....
Is their any chance I could have a good look at it???  be so grateful.

I can't find out much at all about this Memorial on the internet, or much about the company...

Living in hope.....  thank you.
