I now set about trying to find another birth registration for this person. Are the BMD indexes available other than on microfiche at the local library? What about through the NZSG?

They are all usefull at the various stages in the persons life to "prove" that you are following the correct blood line.

As Mk2 said in your other post, start with the 2 marriage certs.
This should then tell you the Mother and Father of the bride and groom.
Also occupation for the marriage couple and their fathers, also the maiden name for the mothers.
